The best Christmas market city breaks in Europe

We’ve chosen our must-visit Europe Christmas markets in 2025, with some continuing into early January if you want to keep the festive feels going.

Berlin, November 24th to December 30th 2025

Normally on the Gendarmenmarkt, but held on Bebelplatz this year between the Berlin State Opera and St. Hedwig's Cathedral, WeihnachtsZauber is our favourite among Berlin’s Christmas markets. We rate it for its ambiance and its tented artisan village, with local wood carvers and other craftspeople showing off their skills.

Kraków, November 28th 2025 to January 1st 2026

This southern Polish city oozes character all year round, with its well-preserved medieval core and Jewish Quarter to explore. But it’s especially charming at this time of year when its main square, Rynek Główny, is taken over by market stalls, street performances, folklore shows, and live regional music.

Prague, November 29th 2025 to January 6th 2026

Of all the Czech capital’s Christmas markets, the one in the Old Town Square stands out for its spectacular cathedral views. As well as snapping up local crafts, you can feast on national specialties such as roast pork, gingerbread, hot mead, and Trdelník (a kind of cake wrapped around a stick, topped with sugar and walnuts) while listening to carols and other live music.

Vienna, November 14th to December 26th 2025

The Austrian capital has several Christmas markets, the best of which is the traditional ‘Vienna Magic of Advent’ event in City Hall Square, accessed via a candlelit archway. Here, you will also find the city’s best rink, Vienna Ice World, with its trail through the gorgeously illuminated City Hall Park. Don’t miss the multi-level carousel, reindeer train, and nativity scene trail, in addition to all the crafts and food stalls.

Edinburgh, November 15th 2025 to January 4th 2026

One of the most popular markets in Europe sees Princes Street Gardens transformed into a wonderland with the Big Wheel with city views, the magical 'Santa Train', classic funfair rides such as a helter-skelter, and enticing stalls.

Some experiences are too good to leave to chance. The kind of trips where timing matters — when seasons align, views disappear fast, and the best stays are gone before most people even start planning.

Here are five journeys that reward early planners:

1. Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
Explore a living museum of evolution. Cruises and eco-lodges have strict visitor limits, so securing your spot early ensures you can snorkel with sea lions, meet giant tortoises, and sail stress-free.

2. Kyoto, Japan (Cherry Blossom Season)
When Japan turns pink, everything fills up — ryokans, trains, and garden-view rooms. Planning ahead means quieter walks under the blossoms and access to exclusive evening temple openings.

3. Great Migration, Kenya
From June to October, the plains come alive with wildebeest and zebra. The best camps with private decks and expert guides sell out fast, so early booking guarantees your front-row safari view.

4. Northern Lights, Norway
Cruises and Arctic lodges fill up months in advance during this short, magical season. Planning early gives you the best cabins and add-ons like glacier walks or dogsledding.

5. Day of the Dead, Oaxaca, Mexico
In late October, Oaxaca bursts with colour, music, and marigolds. Early bookings mean charming colonial stays and the chance to join local parades and candlelit vigils.

Let’s start planning now — so when the moment comes, all you have to do is live it.

A family guide to New Zealand

Safe, welcoming, and filled with adventures big and small, New Zealand is an easy win for families. It’s the kind of place where kids can run free in wide-open spaces, spot animals they’ve never seen before, and dive into real-life movie sets.

Here are five experiences that will keep everyone in the family smiling.

Wild encounters for little explorers
Animals are always a hit with kids, and New Zealand delivers. Rotorua is home to kiwi hatcheries, where little ones can see the country’s national bird up close and learn about conservation.

Sailing through storybook scenery
Milford Sound is often called the jewel of Fiordland, and it’s easy to see why. Imagine dramatic cliffs rising straight out of the water, waterfalls tumbling down their sides, and mist swirling around mountain peaks. While it’s possible to do Milford Sound in a long day trip from Queenstown, families will find it much easier to stay overnight in the lakeside town of Te Anau.

Glow Worms and underground magic
Few things capture kids’ attention quite like stepping into a cave and seeing thousands of glow worms lighting up the ceiling. At Waitomo, families hop onto a boat that glides quietly along an underground river, with the glow worms shining above like tiny stars. It’s calm, fascinating, and usually a highlight for children.
If you’re travelling through the South Island, Te Anau also has glowworm caves worth visiting.

City thrills with a kiwi twist
New Zealand’s biggest city is often just a gateway for travellers, but families will find plenty to keep them busy if they linger. Start with the Sky Tower, where glass floors and sweeping views thrill kids who love a little adrenaline.

Step into Middle-earth™
For families with bookworms or movie buffs, Hobbiton™ is a must. Located in rolling farmland near Matamata, the Hobbiton™ Movie Set looks exactly as it does on screen. Kids love running down the little lanes, peeking into Hobbit Holes™, and seeing if they can spot details from the films. Parents usually enjoy hearing the behind-the-scenes stories, from how the set was built to the tricks used during filming.

If you’re a lover of paradise beaches lifted fresh from the pages of a holiday brochure, the 115 islands which make up Seychelles are blessed with hundreds of them. Beyond the beach, there’s no shortage of scenic hikes and the turquoise shallows are a snorkeler’s dream. So leave your stresses and worries on the plane, and prepare for the holiday of a lifetime.

Interesting Fact
Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, is the smallest in the world and can be easily explored on foot in less than a day.

Ideal for..

Island-hopping
With 115 coral and granite islands, Seychelles is a great place to take to the seas. Among the top stop-offs are Cousin Island with its fantastic birdlife and hawksbill and green turtles, and Curieuse Island with its giant tortoises (part of a conservation programme). Make sure to take along a picnic and snorkel gear.

Gardens
Anse Royal’s tropical Jardin du Roi is divinely scented by the native spices grown there. Set in the hills, it has glorious coastal views, a small museum in the former planter’s house and a pretty café-restaurant serving Creole dishes. Meanwhile, the National Botanical Gardens in Victoria have rows of coco de Mer palms, a spice grove, giant tortoises and even an area of rainforest inhabited by fruit bats.

Accommodation
From luxury spa-resorts perfect for couples’ breaks or honeymoons to family-friendly accommodation with kids’ clubs and other great facilities, Seychelles has a wonderful choice of resorts.

Water sports and boat-trips
Get out and about on the water all around Seychelles, whether snorkelling, diving, kayaking or SUP paddle-boarding or taking it easy as you absorb the sights and sounds from a glass-bottomed boat.

Horse-riding
Stables around Mahé have horses for all ages and abilities, with the most popular rides being through the mangroves and along pristine beaches.
