Today’s journey through northern Afghanistan
We began in Aqcha Bazaar, a town renowned across Afghanistan for its handwoven carpets and traditional craftsmanship, where generations of artisans have preserved this important part of Afghan culture.
Continuing towards Balkh, we visited the historic Noh Gumbad Mosque (Haji Piyada Mosque), dating back to the 9th century and widely regarded as the oldest surviving Islamic monument in Afghanistan. Its intricate stucco decoration reflects the early influence of Islamic art in the region.
Next was the beautiful Shrine of Khwaja Abu Nasr Parsa, built during the Timurid period in honor of the renowned 15th-century Naqshbandi scholar and Sufi master. The shrine remains one of the most important spiritual landmarks in Balkh.
The day concluded at the ancient Bala Hisar of Balkh, the citadel of one of the world’s oldest cities. Often called the “Mother of Cities,” Balkh has been a center of civilization for over two millennia, witnessing the rise of Persian, Greek, Buddhist, and Islamic cultures.
A remarkable day exploring the layers of history that make Afghanistan one of the most fascinating destinations in the world.
