Nestled in the breathtaking valley of the Albanian Alps, Theth Church (Kisha e Thethit) is a small yet iconic Roman Catholic church that has stood since around 1892, serving as the spiritual and cultural heart of the remote mountain village of Theth. Built in traditional alpine style with local stone and a steep wooden roof, the church blends harmoniously with the dramatic peaks of the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna). It was constructed during a time when the Catholic faith played a central role in the daily lives of the people of Northern Albania, particularly in the face of Ottoman dominance, and it became a place not only of worship but of community gathering and conflict resolution, especially in accordance with the Kanun, the customary code of law in the highlands. During the Communist regime, when religion was harshly suppressed and Albania was declared the world’s first atheist state, the church was closed and repurposed—at times used for storage or as a shelter—yet it survived, a silent witness to decades of repression. Following the fall of communism in the early 1990s, the church was restored to its original purpose and has since become a powerful symbol of resilience, faith, and heritage. Today, Theth Church is one of Albania’s most photographed landmarks, often captured with the backdrop of majestic peaks and clear skies, and is a must-see for visitors trekking through Theth National Park or hiking the famed Valbona-Theth trail. It stands near other notable sites such as the Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit), Grunas Waterfall, and the Blue Eye of Theth, enriching the cultural and natural experience of the area.
