Junik Highlands (Bjeshka e Junikut) is one of the most spectacular mountain regions in the Albanian Alps (Accursed Mountains), located along the border between Kosovo and Albania.
The area is renowned for its dramatic peaks, vast alpine meadows, crystal-clear glacial lakes, and scenic hiking and off-road routes.
Highlights include:
Gjeravica (2,656 m / 8,714 ft), the highest peak in Kosovo.
The beautiful Gjeravica Glacial Lake.
Traditional mountain pastures and shepherd huts.
Panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Albanian Alps and the Junik Valley.
The Junik Highlands are an excellent destination for:
Guided 4×4 overland expeditions
Hiking and mountaineering
Wild camping
Landscape and wildlife photography
Nature escapes during the summer months
The best time to visit is June to September, when the mountain roads and hiking trails are generally accessible and the alpine meadows are at their most vibrant. During winter, heavy snowfall often limits access and requires specialized equipment.
