Sevanavank - this monastic complex located on a peninsula along the shore of Lake Sevan in Armenia, was originally built on a small island. After the artificial draining of Lake Sevan during the era of Joseph Stalin, the water level fell about 20 metres, and the island transformed into a peninsula.

I was surprised to see cats in mosques on my visit to Istanbul. Spot the kitty here in the world-famous Hagia Sophia. After a little research I found this:
“Turkey is not unique among predominately Muslim countries for honouring its cats, which are considered ritually clean animals in Islam. In the hadith, the collected sayings and actions of Muhammad, there are numerous examples of the Prophet’s fondness for cats. By one account, Muhammad cut off his sleeve when he had to rise for prayers so as to not disturb a feline that had curled up on his robe for a nap. In another tale, the pet cat of Abu Hurayrah (literally “father of the kitten”) saved Muhammad from an attack by a deadly serpent. Muhammad purportedly blessed the cat in gratitude, giving cats the ability to always land on their feet. Cats were considered guardians in other respects for the Islamic world: they defended libraries from destruction by mice and may have helped protect city populations from rat-borne plagues.”

(Not so) fun fact: Gregory the Illuminator, the saint that worked to establish Armenia as the first Christian nation, was once held in a dungeon in Khor Virap for 13 years.
Though it is now a site of religious pilgrimage, Khor Virap was once a royal prison.

We actually climbed down a 27 step ladder into the dungeon on our visit. Although we visited it without the added snakes and insects that were in it with Gregory, it was small and damp enough to give me a healthy dose of claustrophobia.

Thankfully, I got to crawl back out and soak in the stunning view of Mt. Ararat where it is believed that Noah’s ark landed after the great flood.

Appreciation post: before I catch up on this adventure, I have to say none of this trip would have happened without this man. I’m forever grateful for the friendship, generosity, patience and craziness he brings to my life. He is my favorite Russian tutor and the only person I know that pushes even my limits for travel. If any of the posts from this trip inspire you, I hope they inspire you to be more spontaneous and adventurous. Plan a trip without a plan 😉 That’s how he’d do it.

Thanks Anton. (Sorry if this post makes you blush 😜😉)

Resting just over the border in Turkey, this is still a place of huge importance to Armenians.

Finally made it to 🇹🇷
I have SUPER limited time here so I’m recharging (literally charging my phone) here at the and getting tips and info. I need to be at the airport tomorrow by 1 pm to take a Covid test for 🇬🇪.
I have already seen some of the famous April and plan to visit .
Anyone have a tip or idea for my morning tomorrow??
I know I have to have a good Turkish breakfast if possible 😉 but that may be difficult during Ramadan.

50% of solo travel in the Balkans is waiting for late buses, silently freaking out that you missed it or went to the wrong place, only comforted by the fact that there are at least 20 other lost-looking people waiting with you and you hope you're all waiting for the same bus. 😉🤦‍♀️👌🚌

Let's talk about jump therapy. It's like smile therapy only better. You've heard of smile therapy, right? When you are feeling a little blue, if you force yourself to smile for 30 seconds it will trick your mind into releasing happy sauce into your system and you'll feel better. So that's a great idea OR you can just try my newly prescribed jump therapy and take a jump photo. My new friend, Fui Yee, is the one that got me hooked. She loves to take these photos when she travels and now she has our whole little group of Sarajevo friends doing it. The process of getting this picture made me laugh so much I think my abs got a little more toned. 😂 We got tons of photos with ill-timed jumps and ridiculous poses where for some reason I threw my head back at an unnatural angle that gave me a triple chin I didn't know I had. Of course onlookers stare unabashedly to make you feel extra awkward... and I couldn't stop laughing. I didn't need jump therapy that day, I was pretty happy already. But one day, when Im feeling blue, I'm gonna use it and so should you. @ Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track

. My favorite Macedonian village with some of my favorite Macedonian people. I loved seeing the natural beauty of Mavrovo National Park. Though the small towns in the park are not well connected by public transport (it pretty much doesn't exist), relying on locals for rides and information helped me make amazing friends. This place definitely has a special place in my heart. 💜

In Italy, never forget to LOOK UP! 👀⬆️😍🏛
Palace in houses the Teatro Anatomico where students used to go to see human dissections. It was also the first permanent building of the University of Bologna that joined all of the disciplines in one space in 1563. Though the Library and Teatro inside were a must-visit for, the outer portion of the buildingis also quite enchanting. Don't forget to slow down and take it in, it is all part of the experience. There is virtually no line to the theater so you don't have to worry about a wait when you get inside. ❤
Happy Travels! 👍🌎🤗 @ Bologna Teatro Anatomico

TRAVEL IS A PRIORITY. 🌍❤🍃
Last year I swore I wouldn't spend another birthday in North Dakota. Don't get me wrong, I love Minot and my life there but I was so worried I was getting complacent and maybe just a little stuck. I am a big believer in getting out of your comfort zone so I made sure to jump back out of mine. It was harder this time! After a while of being in one place, living cozily, surrounded by friends and family your mind begins to rebel when it's time to leave. Even if you WANT to go, I think it's natural instinct to crave your safety net. Well, as you all know, I've been away from that cozy zone for a few months and 3 days ago I turned 26 in Dubrovnik! I had a great birthday celebrating with one of my favorite people up above the city. I'm so glad I took this adventure and remembered how to use my wings. It's important to flex those muscles 😉💪❤
