Queen Nzinga: The Warrior Queen Who Defied an Empire

Queen Nzinga Mbande of Ndongo and Matamba, in modern-day Angola, stands as one of Africa’s most formidable resistance leaders. Born around 1583, she spent her life fighting to preserve her people’s sovereignty against Portuguese colonial expansion.

Nzinga first gained prominence in 1622 during negotiations in Luanda. When the Portuguese governor offered her a mat on the floor instead of a chair, she famously sat on the back of an attendant—refusing to accept a subordinate position. After assuming power, she initially sought diplomacy, even converting to Christianity. But when the Portuguese repeatedly broke their treaties, she abandoned negotiation and turned to guerrilla warfare.

For decades, Nzinga led military campaigns against the Portuguese, forging alliances with the Dutch and uniting rival African kingdoms. She offered refuge to escaped slaves and built a diverse, loyal army. Even into her sixties, she reportedly led troops into battle.

In 1657, she secured a peace treaty that returned captured subjects and affirmed her territory. She ruled until her death in 1663 at approximately age eighty.

Today, Queen Nzinga is celebrated as the mother of Angola—a lasting symbol of African resistance, female leadership, and the unyielding defense of sovereignty.

Welwitschia is a monotypic genus of gnetophytes containing only the species Welwitschia mirabilis. It is named after the Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch, who documented the plant in the 1850s. In common use, it is sometimes referred to as the tree tumbo. It is native to Angola and Namibia, where it grows in the extreme conditions of the Namib desert, tolerating high heat and low precipitation. Welwitschia is the only living genus of the family Welwitschiaceae and order Welwitschiales, and is one of three extant genera of gnetophytes, alongside Gnetum and Ephedra.
