Torre Monumental (formerly known as the Torre de los ingleses)

Located across from the Retiro Train Station in downtown Buenos Aires, this clock tower, reminiscent of Big Ben, was gifted to the city by its British immigrant community in 1916 to commemorate the nation’s centennial. At the time, a good part of Buenos Aires’ British community worked for the railway company, which is why it is located near the station. The tower stands 75.5 meters tall (248 ft) and is made of bricks and stone imported from England.

Today, the tower serves as an information center for the city’s museums and also houses an exhibit of its history. An observation deck is open to visitors from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Argentina remembers. Fifty years ago today, March 24, 1976, a military coup overthrew the government of Isabela Perón and ushered in the country’s bloodiest dictatorship. An estimated 30,000 people were disappeared, including children. Since the return of democracy in 1983, every March 24, Argentines across the country take to the streets demanding information about the disappeared and justice for the perpetrators of state terrorism. Collectively we say, “Never again!”

We will hit all the major landmarks and tourist sites, including: Memory Park (homage to the 30,000 disappeared during the last dictatorship); Rosedal (rose garden); Recoleta Cemetery (final resting place of renowned Argentine figures, including Evita); Teatro Colon (worldclass opera house); Plaza de Mayo (Presidential Palace and more); San Telmo (famous for its Sunday fair and market); and La Boca (with its colorful Caminito and home to Boca Jrs. football club).

Cost: $120 per person
