Wie beim Denkmal des Kaisers Franz in der Hofburg, waren Frauen Nebendarstellerinnen in der Geschichte. Gestern holte ich einige starke Vertreterinnen vor dem Vorhang in meiner neuen Tour: Giesela Laferl, Rosalia Graf, Irene Harand, F***y Arnstein, Eugenie Schwarzwald, Caroline von perin Gradenstein um einige hier zu nennen.

Recently, one of my guests told me that her father, who was imprisoned in Mauthausen, celebrated May 6, liberation day, as his personal birthday rather than his biological one.

Today the Mauthausen Committee Austria held a liberation and commemoration celebration to never forget. It was an experience to visit Mauthausen and Gusen earlier this month with Richard Cockett, author of Vienna: How the City of Ideas Created the Modern World and gain his perspective. In the chapter on “The war on science and the end of Vienna” he writes: “… the Austrian N***s went about their killing with that same distinctive diligence as their victims exhibited in Red Vienna’s intellectual hinterland.”

In May 1945, thousands of prisoners were liberated from the Mauthausen concentration camp, after approximately 90,000 people had been murdered by the N**i henchmen at this site of horror in the preceding seven years.

The way the remains of the enormous Gusen satellite camp were handled after World War II also tells the story of how Austria only slowly came to terms with its past. Only now is serious work being done to establish a dignified exhibition and memorial site in Gusen. Especially in times of a global trend toward authoritarianism, we should all be aware of the extreme inhumanity that dictatorships can reach.

In this tour, I’ll take you to the places where groundbreaking theories were developed (that influenced even Einstein!) and visit other key landmarks. We’ll also discuss the political and social environment that made this extraordinary period of reason possible, and how this golden age had a horribly abrupt end. It’s really an honor that Richard will be with us in person, and is available to share more context with you from his book and answer your questions.
