Part-time employees work less than 38 hours per week on average and get similar entitlements to full-time employees such as paid leave, notice of termination and redundancy pay.

Most awards and agreements have rules about part-time hours of work. Generally, they say that when a part-time employee is first employed, they must get a written agreement setting out a ‘regular pattern of work’. The agreement generally includes details like:
• the employee’s hours of work each week
• start and finish times and
• the days of the week that they work.

Part-time employees may be entitled to overtime if they work beyond their agreed ordinary hours.
