Anakie Action Group Hands Off Our Sisters! A 250-acre quarry and blasting site is planned at The Three Sisters in Anakie. You can help prevent it!

A 250-acre quarry is planned for Anakie

Aerolite Quarries, a company owned by Ken Jarvis, wants to build a 250-acre quarry and blasting site at The Three Sisters. The proposed quarry would be a massive extension of the present scoria quarry operated by Aerolite on a neighbouring site. If approved, the quarry will:

• Occupy 250 acres – more than 50 times the size of the playing surface at Simonds

Stadium

• Be up to 75 metres deep after remediation – higher than Simonds Stadium and its light towers

• Involve regular blasting and road closures

• Be situated within 3000 metres of Anakie township

• Be situated within a beautiful recreational, agricultural and tourism area – home of the Anakie Fairy Park, Anakie Gorge, farms, vineyards, restaurants, horse riding, camping, cycling, kangaroos and koalas. The quarry is totally out of context with the rural setting and the emergence of the Anakie area as an inland playground of Geelong

VCAT has released its decision about the Anakie quarry permit application.
In essence, VCAT finds that the proposal “is an appropriate one and one for which permission should be granted, subject to conditions.”
A copy of the VCAT decision is available on the website. www.anakieactiongroup.org
While this is an extremely disappointing decision, the campaign has resulted in additional operating restrictions on the quarry, which we will need to ensure are complied with.
We will have the decision and conditions reviewed by our lawyers and quarry expert and advise of any further response.
In the meantime we acknowledge the efforts of the Anakie and wider community for its extraordinary effort to prevent this permit from being granted. We thank everyone for their efforts and contribution to the campaign.
Kind regards
The Anakie Action Group

A short post to advise you all that we are now moving into the VCAT stage. Under VCAT we no longer need petition signatures, we want to take this opportunity to thank all those people that got behind The Anakie Action Group with petitions and objections to the City of Greater Geelong. Thank you again to everyone for your support. We will provide an update on our progress in VCAT as and when appropriate.

We may have won at council, but we still have to get through VCAT! Show your support by signing our petition.

Just in case you hadn't heard, We won our first battle at council, You can read an account of the night on our homepage.

But its not over, our next hurdle is at VCAT, thanks to all your efforts, we'll have council by our side!

In a 4-3 vote, the councillors rejected the Council’s planning department recommendation that a huge basalt quarry be allowed on a 250-acre site at the feet of The Three Sisters hills in Anakie.

Poem and Painting: Anarchy in Anakie
By Jenny Phillips – the Poet Lorikeet

Oh there’s anarchy in Anakie Word has got around
That a quarry application Will scar its sacred ground
They plan to blast and plunder To create a massive hole 40-million tonnes of basalt Don’t they have a soul?

Have you ever stopped and gazed
At nature all around?
Ever watched the moving clouds?
On the Sisters, colours changing with no sound

Daily weather patterns Create a huge display
Now they want to change it Cart it all away
Morning birds awakening
Farmers ploughing in the fields Serenity and calmness – our Anakie

This is what we feel
Wildlife roaming freely
For all to share and view
Anakie does not need another quarry This depends on me and you!
