A WILD SRI LANKAN COOKING EXPERIENCE AT THE EDGE OF YALA

At Wild Coast Tented Camp, your cooking class unfolds in one of the most extraordinary settings on earth — where the jungle meets the Indian Ocean and the air hums with the sounds of Yala’s untamed wilderness. As you step into the open‑air culinary space, you’re surrounded by rustling palms, birdsong, and the distant roar of the surf — a reminder that here, nature is always part of the story.

Guided by expert chefs who draw inspiration from the land and sea, you’ll explore the vibrant flavours that define Sri Lankan cuisine. Together, you’ll grind spices by hand, simmer fragrant coconut curries, and learn the secrets behind dishes shaped by centuries of tradition. Every ingredient has a story — from the just‑picked herbs to the catch brought in by local fishermen — reflecting the region’s deep connection to its environment.

As you cook, the camp’s wild surroundings become part of the experience. The breeze carries the scent of cinnamon and curry leaves, while monkeys chatter in the treetops and the landscape shifts with the changing light. This is not just a class — it’s immersion. A moment where food, culture, and wilderness come together in perfect harmony.

Travelling with Eating Your Way Around The World elevates this experience even further. Our small, curated groups ensure you have time, space, and personal guidance to truly connect with the flavours of Sri Lanka. We handle every detail so you can focus on learning, tasting, and soaking in the magic of this remote coastal sanctuary. With us, you don’t just watch Sri Lankan cuisine being made — you become part of it.

From the first crackle of spices in the pan to the final shared meal beneath the canopy of trees, this cooking class is a celebration of Sri Lanka’s soul: wild, warm, generous, and unforgettable.

Yala is wildness with a pulse.
It’s the thrill of not knowing what waits around the next bend.
It’s the humbling reminder that nature is bigger, older, and more magnificent than we often remember.
It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left — in your senses, in your stories, in the way your heart beats a little faster when you think of it. As you can see, the wildlife is always on hand to provide you with an insight into their daily rituals. The mud has a cooling effect on the buffalo and on a very hot day, this is of great importance to these majestic beasts. Do join us on one of our tours, or allow us to design a tour just for you as a couple. Don't want to be a part of the big tours - then we have what you need. We can do whatever fits with your requests.

THE WILD COAST TENTED LODGE is nothing short of incredible.
Located in the heart of Yala NP, it doesn't get much better than this.
Yala National Park isn’t a place you visit. It’s a place that rises up to meet you.
The moment you cross its threshold, the world shifts — the air thickens with heat and possibility, the earth glows in shades of gold and rust, and every rustle in the brush feels like the beginning of a story.
This is leopard country.
Not in the casual, brochure-slogan sense — but in the electric, heart-thumping way where you know you’re sharing the landscape with one of the world’s most elusive predators. You scan the treetops, the sunlit rocks, the winding dirt tracks… and suddenly, there it is. A silhouette draped over a branch like royalty at rest. A flick of a tail. A slow, deliberate blink.
It’s the kind of moment that steals your breath and hands it back changed.

Elephants wander here like ancient guardians, moving in gentle herds, dusting themselves in ochre soil that glows against their grey skin. You might see a mother guiding her calf across the road, or a lone bull emerging from the scrub like a memory from another age.
The sky is alive too — painted with eagles, bee-eaters, and storks that glide over shimmering lagoons. Crocodiles sunbathe on the banks, still as carved stone, while deer graze in the open plains, always alert, always listening.
And then there’s the light.
Yala’s sunsets are the kind that feel almost unreal — molten orange spilling across the horizon, silhouettes of trees standing like ink strokes against a burning sky. It’s the kind of beauty that makes you quiet inside.

On 4th February 1948, Sri Lanka regained independence through a peaceful and diplomatic transition, a rarity in a region marked by struggle. At the time, the nation was known as Ceylon, and independence was granted while remaining a Dominion within the Commonwealth, with full republican status following later in 1972.
The iconic lion flag, symbolising courage and sovereignty, was officially adopted soon after, uniting centuries of heritage under one identity.

As a nation shaped by resilience, culture, and diversity, we continue to move forward... proudly carrying our story to the world.

At DTH Travel Sri Lanka, we celebrate not just a milestone, but the spirit of a destination that welcomes travellers with authenticity, warmth, and history at every turn.

Happy 78th Independence Day, Sri Lanka!!

When you tour with big companies, you do not have the ability to make requests - like we did about the stilt fishing. The hat wasn't necessary but the gentleman who held my arm while I climbed onto the rail thought it needed to be a part of the shot. Sri Lanka is a place that you need flexibility, stop to take photos, do things that you have seen others do, NOT on a bus and off a bus, then move on. We offer personalised service to our clients, we offer flexibility, we offer moments like these - if you want them. Check us out on our website, www.eatingyourwayaroundtheworld.com.au We are ready for 2026

Gangaramaya Temple is one of the most popular and iconic temples located in Colombo. Gangaramaya temple's architecture features a heterogeneous mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese styles. Located on the banks of the famous Beira Lake in Colombo 2, the Gangaramaya consists of the main temple, a museum, a library and vocational training centers.

The 120-year-old Gangaramaya is not the typical Sri Lankan temple. Situated in the bustling inner-city Colombo, nearby the scenic Beira Lake, this intriguing temple complex is simultaneously a hugely popular tourist attraction, a place of worship and a learning and vocational training centre.
