When designing women's underwear, I wonder if a group of men sat around a table wondering what they could add to a design to make it more appealing to their target market.

Plain, simple, and practical, they thought "what would a woman want? What would make them feel pretty? We want them to feel pretty".

One man looked closely at the deigns and said tentatively, "women like bows... We.. We could put a bow on them..." and everyone in the room cheered at the ingenuity of the suggestion.

And to this day, some underwear manufacturers still believe adding a little tiny bow to women's underwear to be the height of marketing genius.

Last night I asked my son if I could give him a kiss and he said no, he didn't want one yet. I said that's OK, and asked him if he knew why. He proudly said 'My body, my rules!' and I told him he was absolutely right. He is five years old, which can be a vulnerable age when it comes to trusting people. Children often trust blindly, so as parents we need to do what we can to teach them what is OK and what is not.

I asked him a series of simple questions. What happens if someone wants to touch your p***s or bottom? What happens if someone asks you to touch their p***s or bottom, or v***a or breasts? Who is allowed to touch these parts of your body? He answered correctly each time, and we spoke about giving permission, about certain people like doctors being allowed to, as long as they have permission from us.

We spoke about good secrets (a surprise gift for example) and bad secrets (don't tell anyone or you'll get in trouble) and scenarios where people may invite him to go with them or to look at something.

I've been having conversations with my kids about these things for years. This also includes who to seek help from if you need it and what to do if you're in a dangerous situation, like being grabbed by someone.

They may be not be the easiest conversations to have, but children need to learn that they are in charge of their own bodies and they can and should talk to their trusted people. As parents and carers we can only do our best to keep them safe, and every bit of information they have is power. It isn't always enough, but every little bit helps.

Apparently you all haven't heard from me in a while. Four days in fact. My apologies. I actually had to reformat my hard drive and start reinstalling everything!!! I don't have Photoshop back yet which makes me a little sad. It's on my to do list.
