Three unforgettable days exploring the heart of the Nullarbor with a wonderful group of guests from Air Adventure's Great Southern Edge journey and Australian Coastal Safaris.

Travelling by private aircraft before joining us in our 4WDs, we visited the remarkable Weebubbie, Koonalda and Murrawijinie caves, discovering the geology, landscapes and natural history that make the Nullarbor one of Australia's most extraordinary places.

Thank you to such a curious and engaged group. Your thoughtful questions and enthusiasm made the journey every bit as rewarding as the places we visited. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Ancient Land again.

Just south of Penong on Eyre Peninsula, Lake MacDonnell is worth a detour. It's a natural masterpiece — vivid pink waters on one side, contrasting with deep green tones on the other. The result of high salinity and the work of algae and bacteria, it’s a stunning reminder of how diverse and surprising Eyre can be.

Perfect for photographers, day-trippers, or anyone craving a taste of the remote, Lake MacDonnell is a stop that stays in the memory long after you leave. Experience the contrasts, the colours, and the quiet magic of this iconic Far West Coast spot.

There are no facilities here for travellers, so come prepared and please leave just your appreciation for nature, nothing else.

*Note for all - the colour of Lake MacDonnell is very dependent on the water levels and is not always this vibrant!

It was an adventure into the unknown. From the surface all that could be seen was a small opening. The ABC has been given exclusive access to newly-discovered caves on South Australia's Kangaroo Island.

Every coastline has a story, but few hold the footprints of a giant wallaby that made its way across this land around 110,000 years ago.

On our coastal tour, we visit a discreet and rarely seen site where these ancient impressions are preserved in the limestone. It’s a quiet moment in the landscape, no signs, no crowds, just the chance to stand where megafauna once passed through a very different coastline.

Along the way, we explore remote cliffs, bird-rich dunes, and the subtle ecological threads that tie this coast to the wider landscape. As always, our tours focus on natural history, and genuine field discovery.

If you’re curious about the deep past, or simply enjoy seeing the world through a different lens, this is a day that stays with you.

Scientific fieldwork is a part of what we do at Ancient Land Tours. On our latest Nullarbor field trip, led by Dr Jess Marsh, ARC Fellow at the University of Adelaide, we surveyed more than twenty cave sites for undescribed troglobitic invertebrates, including blind spiders. These ongoing collaborations with scientists help build long-term knowledge, and ensure this remarkable landscape is understood, protected, and valued.

We’re excited to announce that Ancient Land Tours has been awarded a grant under the Experience Nature Tourism Fund!

This support will help us bring our signature remote-area adventures further into South Australia’s Far West and the Nullarbor with a new expedition trailer, expanded itineraries and improved marketing so more people can explore wild landscapes, discover cave systems, spot native wildlife and experience the remote beauty of the Outback.
