During our extended visit to Lake Mungo and the far west of NSW last October, including a few days at a cattle station, “Bindara on the Darling”, Elizabeth fell in love with emus (she had never seen them in their natural habitat before). These majestic birds are native and exclusive to Australia and are so special that an emu, along with our other iconic native animal - the kangaroo - appears on Australia’s Coat of Arms. Emus suffered enormously during the last drought, so it was encouraging to see so many young birds on our travels.

The nest of an emu can be up to a metre and a half wide. The emu egg can weigh up to 700 grams – equal to a carton of large chicken eggs – and the male will sit patiently on the nest to incubate the eggs (perhaps because female emus are usually larger than the males – standing up to two metres tall - and boss their poor male partner around).

More emu facts: emus can run at speeds of up to 50km per hour and their stride can be up to three metres. And they swallow large pebbles to help their stomach grind up their food. They are herbivorous, although they will eat insects when they are available (e.g. during grasshopper plagues).

We have now created a “tribute” to the emu as part of the circuit that goes down to Chateau Chook and back.

One of the projects we've been working on at Werekataba. You'll pass it as you walk down to visit the chickens. A big thank you to my gorgeous friend Wendy & her son Jye for creating the pouring teapot and cup n saucer. Love your creativity.

Sadly, Elizabeth's mum passed away a few weeks ago. Lucinda was dearly loved by all, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Today we had a little family ceremony to bury the casket containing her ashes. The spot is marked by a "Mother's Love" rose (a gift from our friend Julia) and flanked by two "Peace" roses. Rest in peace mum, grandma, G-G.

While our business has ground to a halt and we are largely confined to barracks here at Werekataba, we've been occupying our time by walking the dogs along our boundary fences, catching up with old friends via phone & social media, enjoying glorious autumn blooms, potting up the bulbs, baking cakes and Elizabeth has just finished knitting a jumper for our youngest granddaughter Sophie.

Happy Easter to all. Hope you have an eggs-cellent day.

Our latest yard projects are now completed, including the rebuilding of "Chateau Chook". Our eight new hens have been named by our grand-children who, despite being aware that the hens are 'girls' have insisted on naming them Rachael, Andrew, Sophie, Flopsy, Mopsy, Peter Rabbit, Rosie and Frank. You can see that we have no gender identity problems in this family.
