Hope you're having better luck than me finding mushrooms in your forest! 🙃

Hunting for mushrooms is often challenging, finding the right spot, finding mushrooms, mountain goat level forest terrain, freezing cold.... but over the past year and a half I've had a different challenge... foraging with a baby! I've punctured 3 sets of pram tyres and eventually installed run flats, cause we are the definition of off road pram 😆 not gonna lie it's been hard to get out there and do my usual level of enthusiastic foraging, so today I decided to film a quick minute of my daily struggle. Wouldn't have it any other way than bush bashing with my baby but ❤️ this is real life, unfiltered, no makeup, no advertising just how we do it ♥️

This Mushroom Mumma got spoilt rotten yesterday for my birthday 🍄 Lions mane grow kit, mushroom boots and Japanese knives -one for my kitchen and one for my workshop 😀 thank you to my amazing tribe, friends and followers looking forward to another amazing season cycle. Plus finally some mushrooms yesterday on my home, slipperies, grey knights, a purple nudie and muchos magics! Thus proving sometimes trusting your foraging instincts to stop randomly and go for a hunt in the rain proves fruitful ♥️

Elderberry gel custard cakes, cause ya know rainy days = cook fest 😋
Simple vanilla sponge cake sliced in half.
My custard hack = 5 eggs, 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup flour 1 cup milk
Beat in large microwave safe glass bowl
Microwave for 2 minutes, beat with egg be**er for a minute Microwave again for 1 min beat again, repeat until custard stiffens to desired consistency.
Elderberry gel is simple too, just chuck some Elderberries in a small bowl, add 1/4 cup pf icing sugar and some water - Microwave for a minute or 2 and mix.
I drizzled the Elderberry gel over the top of custard cake and serve.
So freaking delish I'll be making this again for sure

Exciting day tomorrow. We're having a radio show come to us on Foragers Family Farm 😀 Dig it on Maine FM will be joining Oscar and I to talk all things sustainability, harvesting w**ds from the garden for the table, mushrooms and growing tropical plants from your kitchen in central Victoria. So proud of my 11 year old son for taking initiative to grow his own pineapple, mango and lychee plants in my workshop space. He's been in a few national publications before but this is his 1st ever radio appearance, he is gonna ace it! We'll be posting the episode for you all to listen and some content to sink your teeth into- yum yum 😋 in the meantime drool alert for these Oxalis (sour grass), bean and onion w**d empanadas (Spanish fried turn overs) w**ding your garden can be tasty work ###

90% of my closest friends I have connected with since putting down my roots in the country. This beautiful land that is so often not appreciated has transformed my life and turned me into a guardian of it and the lost knowledge of foraging from the land for food and medicine.
I used to have a rule about not mixing work with personal, not anymore. My life is my profession and my personal life and work overlap in the best way imaginable.
My best friend Kate Borradaile and Mark Borradaile attended a mushroom workshop on a mountain and became part of my tribe.
They are they Guideparents of my babies and I cannot imagine life without my Amazon soil sister. She was even my maid of honour at my wedding!
Kate is a master eco printer -check out Beautiful Wasteland and the first time we hung out and went for a forage I had my eyes on the trees "can you print with that plant?" And she had her eyes to the ground "can you eat that mushroom?" Roles reversed and a match made in heaven.

Kate is our resident moment capture master, from magical tea parties to glow twirling performing as glow tribe on NYE 2019 on the Ship4Good MV Steve Irwin Not for Profit to opening my dream workshop space on the farm, you've been by my side through it all, good and not so good ♥️

I have this theory that the mycelium connects us with who, what and when we need to be in the universe, every step we take, every breath we take we connect with spores and mushrooms and they connect us, we just need to listen and tune in to that connection.

If you nurture nature she nurtures you right back, just breathe, trust, love and take a moment to connect.

I love you Kate, you are the only person I have ever run a workshop with and felt equally recharged and in sync.
Your support and encouragement for years has made me want to be better and keep going, even through lockdowns, when I had to put Free Food Foragers into hibernation, you were there to support me and all my mad endeavors and love all sides of me.

Here's a little story of Foraging connection for you. A few years ago in a forest teaching about hunting mushrooms I met this lovely woman and her son, who were just so enthusiastic about learning foraging we connected instantly. Over the years we have become friends, had our own plant knowledge journeys and continued to connect at workshops and events.

Last weekend the universe aligned and we had a 1 on 1 foraging cooking session. It was the best 👌we sipped wild foraged herbal tea, wandered my winter garden and picked herbs and w**ds- about all thats growing at the moment and made delicious laska and dumplings with the home grown oyster mushrooms she bought with her (along with some fruit for my piggies!) We fed the animals and nourished our souls.

Taking a rare break from both our busy lives to just be with a good friend and share in our combined wild bounty. Eat cake, sip tea and chat.

This is what foraging is truly about people. The community you make when you allow yourself to live outside the normal and reconnect with the earth, she connects you with the people who are good for your life and share what you share = love of nature.

Thank you Alissa Walsh for being such a supporter of my crazy mushroom loving self over the years ❤️
This is just one of many tales I'll be sharing over the coming weeks of foraging friends who have been a part of my story and life, my heart is full because of the wonderful friendships I've made in the forests and the beautiful wild community we are continously building.

Magic 🍄 Mushrooms, psilocybin, micro dosing. It's the #1 question I get asked as a mushroom educator.
LET'S GET REAL here = it is one of the most dangerous mushrooms to try and pick, because there are so so many look a like mushrooms. So please if you're interested in this wonderful magical medicine, do you research! It has so many fantastic benefits when used properly; again with someone who knows how to guide you on your healing journey.

Learn from an experienced forager as I did many many years ago (shout out to my old boys out diamond creek ways!) 😊

I learnt about most mushrooms myself over the years, but this is one mushroom even I sought guidance on when learning about it's magic.

I always have and always will be an advocate of research into psilocybin as medicine and connection to mother nature, but it is exactly that medicine and needs to be used with holistic therapy over a long period. It is not an immediate cure to anxiety, depression = NOTHING IS AN INSTANT CURE anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
❤️ do the work, connect and reconnect with nature in nature 🍄❤️

Our Story

Free Food Foragers is a ‘Mum run’ grass roots initiative that started 4 years ago with a simple moment of gardeners frustration. While pulling out endless w**ds from the garden and getting covered in sticky w**d, I asked “You pain of a plant, you have to be good for something more than sticking to my clothes?”

This started my research, when I discovered this sticky w**d otherwise known as Cleaver was in fact an edible w**d and had great health benefits, a passion for more was ignited and it never stopped.

Before I knew it is was endlessly prattling on to my family about it with “did you know you can eat this… and it does this for you…”
