What time of year is best to visit the Galapagos Islands? December through May is considered the peak season, as it often brings warm weather, calm seas, and wildlife is very active at this time. The hot summer months are also top choices for anyone wanting to snorkel or dive.

However, if you can’t visit during that time, it’s ok! The Galapagos are a year-round destination. June through November is the low season, also known as garua season. During this time, pricing can be a little lower, but this time of year may also bring cooler weather and light rains.

The low season does bring a fun surprise though - the Humboldt Current! It passes through the Galapagos in June and July, bringing with it a hive of marine life activity. It’s a great time to spot dolphins, whales, and penguins, with a wetsuit available for you if the water is chilly. This time of year also brings whale sharks, which are amazing to see. Generally, you'll also experience fewer crowds in garua season.

While most Arctic cruise passengers can't wait to see a polar bear or walrus, one incredible Arctic resident you may not have on your radar is the musk oxen!

A giant of the Canadian Arctic tundra, the musk oxen is not an animal anyone would want to mess with. They can grow up to 2m in height and weigh an astonishing 280kg, their immense frame covered in thick, impenetrable wool. During mating season, the males emit a very distinct smell, which is where the animal gets its name. The herbivore feeds off moss and lichens and, in spring time, on the wildflowers in which the tundra is drenched.

Also great is the fact that they love to feed on grass near water, which means many Arctic cruise passengers heading to Canada can keep their eyes peeled to the shore in the hope of spotting this mammoth grazer.

Unlike mainstream cruise lines, which tend to follow a very regimented schedule, expedition cruising is all about exploring remote areas that larger ships can’t reach. This means your daily schedule is fluid and may change, depending on factors like weather and ice.

On a typical Antarctic expedition cruise, you’ll spend 4-5 days in the Antarctic Peninsula after crossing the Drake Passage. If conditions are right, you’ll experience two landings per day, which may include shore landings, zodiac cruises, and kayaking, all in a range of different locations. Your expedition crew leader will carefully plan each day, organising visits to Antarctic Peninsula landing sites, and will give you an update the night before about what you'll see the following day.

Did you know there are natural hot springs in the Arctic?

The Arctic region (Greenland in particular) is famously home to some truly amazing hot springs. You can soak in an organic whirlpool bath while watching icebergs float by.

Can life get any better in the Arctic? We think not!

Greenland’s uninhabited Uunartoq Island is home to the most famous hot springs in the country, which can be enjoyed all year long thanks to the balmy 38-degree temperature.

Into the Amazon part 2

The rooms at the lodge boast an open wall that really allows you to connect to the rainforest. As you relax in the hammock in your room, the sounds of the Screaming Piha, Musical Wren & Thrush-like Wren keep you entertained. The shower had excellent water pressure. It was great to have hot shower to help you relax before going to bed, or a quick cold shower if you choose after a trek through the humid rainforest.

Happy King’s Birthday!

Speaking of royalty, let’s give a shoutout to the king penguins—nature’s own noble birds.

Fun fact: King penguins can dive over 300 meters (almost 1,000 feet!) deep in search of fish, making them one of the best deep-sea hunters among birds.

Whether celebrating a monarch or marvelling at majestic wildlife, today is a day fit for kings!

If you’re planning a cruise to Antarctica, our top piece of advice is to book a small ship cruise! Small ships, or expedition ships, are perfectly designed for the unique conditions of the polar regions and these voyages will maximise your time off the ship and on the ice. You’ll leave the ship and spend time on land, amongst the penguins, wildlife, and epic glacial landscapes.

The benefits of small ship cruising to Antarctica are many - here's why small expedition ships are ideal for polar cruising.
