In the 1920s and 1930s, Australia faced a shadowy underworld problem: the rise of the Italian Black Hand. Police gradually uncovered a clandestine network stretching from the hills of Calabria to the streets of Sydney, the sugarcane fields of North Queensland, Melbourne, and even New York. This ruthless organisation extorted Italian farmers, trafficked women across state lines, and carried out brazen murders in broad daylight on the streets of Sydney.

In the early 1930s, the Australian Government reached out directly to Mussolini’s regime in an attempt to identify key figures and understand how to dismantle the syndicate.

This is the story of a series of chilling murders that terrorised Australia during that turbulent period.

Murders Most Foul now offers a unique walking tour that begins beside Kings Cross Station and winds into historic Woolloomooloo — the neighbourhood that served as the Black Hand’s most enduring stronghold in Sydney. Amid the fishing boats, boarding houses, brothels, and old pubs, members of the secret society gathered to conduct their rituals and business. On this tour, you’ll walk in their footsteps and discover the locations where these events unfolded.

This is the first walking tour of its kind in Sydney — a powerful journey into a forgotten chapter of the city’s dark history.

The Pubs of Surry Hills Walking Tour

17 April 2026

This one-off tour for the National Trust Heritage Festival took us on a wander through Surry Hills, where we called in at 53 historic hotels. Some are still trading, others stand as silent relics long after their licences expired, and a few were demolished, their names uttered for the first time in half a century or more.

The Ilford Sprite 35-II was loaded with Fujifilm ISO 400 film. Here are some of the images captured by participants on the walk from the Royal Exhibition Hotel to the Royal Albert Hotel. The shadows are captured by this film in a way that digital cameras cannot achieve. All raw and unedited. Developed by

You probably know that Darlinghurst has a very interesting history and many interesting characters have lived here over the years (and still do 😅). However, did you know that one of the leading 'Jack the Ripper' suspects lived on Riley Street? So sinister was this former resident that they have his death mask on permanent display in the old Melbourne Gaol.

Warning: the story is dark.

Read my article about him here.

You will find the story in physical copies of 2010 Magazine over the coming weeks.

Surry Hills True Crime Walking Tour
Saturday, 9 May 2026

On this tour, I handed the group the Ilford Sprite 35-II loaded with Ilford HP5 Plus black & white 35mm film.

I’ve been shooting exclusively on black & white film for my own work lately and I’m loving the results. With a few spare rolls lying around, I thought it would be perfect for some gritty Surry Hills laneway photography — and it didn’t disappoint.

The camera got passed around the group, and everyone captured some fantastic shots of the crime scenes and locations we visit on the tour. One of the standouts was an 11-year-old lad who took some excellent photos in Sophia Street. I reckon it was his first time using a film camera.

I’ll upload a few more shots shortly. If you’d like to join a historical true crime tour, soak up some fascinating stories from the past, and snap a few photos along the way, book your spot at www.murdersmostfoul.com.

The Black Hand: A History of the Italian Mafia in Sydney

Saturday 18 April 2026 | 11am

Camera: Ilford Sprite 35-II with Fuji Colour 400 ISO film

Step into the shadowy underworld of 1920s–1940s Sydney with our brand-new tour, The Black Hand — guided by acclaimed writer and producer Adam Grossetti (co-creator of the ABC documentary The Black Hand starring Anthony LaPaglia).

We walked the backstreets of Kings Cross and Woolloomooloo, uncovering the hidden world of Australia’s early Italian crime syndicate. From the old docks and the site of Sydney’s first Fish Market, to boarding houses, laneways, and former brothels, these streets once whispered with extortion, trafficking, gangland hits, and the strict code of silence of the Camorra and The Black Hand.

Highlights included the location of Guido Galletti’s gangland ex*****on, the site where the Camorra conducted secret initiation rituals, the notorious 50/50 Club (Sydney’s wildest illegal casino and co***ne den), and the waterfront networks that linked Sydney to North Queensland’s sugar fields.

These raw, unedited analog shots were taken by the tour participants — full of atmosphere, grain, and the gritty spirit of the era. Shot on the Ilford Sprite 35-II with Fuji 400 film.

Special thanks to Adam Grossetti for bringing these dark and fascinating stories to life.

Sydney Odyssey: A Sydney Harbour Walking Tour – Part 2

Saturday 22 March 2026

Camera: Ilford Ilfocolor Rapid Retro Edition – ISO 400 Single Use

The Sydney Odyssey continued from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair into the heart of Woolloomooloo!

We paid our respects at the peaceful pond grave of pioneering botanist Allan Cunningham, then made our way around the bay, taking in the striking views of Garden Island with its navy ships, the iconic Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool, and the beautiful sweep of Woolloomooloo Bay. Along the way we uncovered the dark history of the 1961 Mutilator Murders (and their first crime scene), the old Fig Tree Baths, forgotten tales of Fort Denison, the former Sydney Fish Market, and the historic Finger Wharf.

The tour finished with well-earned refreshments at the heritage-listed Old Fitzroy Hotel — the perfect end to a walk filled with 12,000 years of beauty, mystery, and mayhem.

These raw, unedited participant shots on the Ilford Ilfocolor Rapid perfectly capture the harbour light, industrial remnants, and layered stories of this iconic waterfront stretch. No filters, just pure analog atmosphere.

Full Sydney Odyssey experience — from Circular Quay all the way to Woolloomooloo. More dates coming soon!
