82.4 carats. Never to be cut. Never to be sold.
In 1976, the Bennett family were fossicking at Tomahawk Creek when they pulled something from the wash that would stop them in their tracks - one of the most remarkable sapphires ever found in the Sapphire Gemfields. ๐
Known as the Tomahawk Tiger, this extraordinary gemstone is a rare example of a "dogs tooth" sapphire - a complete natural crystal. At 82.4 carats, its striking bands of golden yellow and deep green give it a tiger-like appearance.
Valued at over a million dollars, it remains in the Richardson Mining family's hands - and Ray Richardson is clear: it will never be cut, and it will never leave the family. ๐ฏ
You can see it in person at Miners Heritage, Rubyvale during the school holidays.
Its full story is one of many brought to life along the freshly updated Sapphire Gemfields Geo-Interpretive Trail, a self-drive trail where interpretive signage shares the region's local characters, booms and busts, and significant gemstone discoveries. ๐บ๏ธ
