⭐ ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL REVIEW FROM THE RIVER ⭐

Sometimes a review comes through and you read it with a pretty big smile on your face. 🧡

Carol recently joined us with her daughter and left us these beautiful words:

“If you want something exciting to do in Mackay, I would highly recommend Platypus Adventures with Chrissy & John.

My daughter & I had an overwhelming first time experience. Seeing multiple platypuses up close, with a 2 hour tour, jam packed with all the information of the natural environment around you was delightful. I assure you will not be disappointed.”

Carol, thank you. 🥹

Because for us, Platypus Adventures has never been just about counting how many platypus we can find.

It’s about slowing down.

Watching the river come alive.

Noticing the birds overhead, the plants along the banks, the little movements in the water — and learning about this incredible environment we’re lucky enough to paddle through.

And, of course, having those magical moments when a platypus pops up right beside you. 🦆🧡

Knowing that our guests are experiencing the river the way we hoped they would when we started all of this means more than you probably realise.

Thank you Carol and your daughter for joining us, and for taking the time to share your experience. We absolutely loved having you out there with us. 🧡

We say it a lot around here…

Slow down. The river will show you. 🧡

But what does that actually mean?

It means noticing the tiny ripple on otherwise still water… and waiting.

It means hearing the birds before you see them.

Watching the mist drift across the river as the sun begins to rise.

Seeing movement in the shadows along the bank and wondering what might appear.

And sometimes, it means sitting completely still while a platypus surfaces right beside you. 🦆🤎

When we first started saying “Slow down. The river will show you,” it was simply how we felt about being out there.

But the more time we spend on the Pioneer River, the more we realise just how true it is.

Recently, before heading out, we told our guests exactly that — don’t rush. Slow down. Look around. Let the river show you.

And at the end of the paddle, they told us they were so glad we had said it… because that was exactly what they did.

And look at everything the river showed us. 🥹

Platypus. Birds. Mist curling off the water. Sunlight catching the fog. Tiny moments we could so easily have paddled straight past.

Maybe that’s one of our favourite things about these adventures.

Yes, we go looking for platypus.

But somewhere along the way, the river reminds us that they’re only part of the adventure.

So next time life feels like it’s moving a little too quickly…

Slow down.

Look around.

You might be surprised by what you see. 🧡

Slow down. The river will show you…

🌫️ When the river started dancing…

There are moments on the river when you just have to stop paddling and watch.

On our recent morning tour, the mist was already putting on a beautiful show across the water when the rising sun began to hit it.

Then something pretty incredible happened.

Little columns of mist started twisting and spiralling upwards, almost like tiny whirlwinds dancing across the river. 🌫️☀️

We sat there watching them form, curl their way towards the sky and disappear… only for another one to appear somewhere else.

So of course we had to find out what was going on. 😂

What we were watching was likely caused by convection. As the morning sun begins warming the river and the air above it unevenly, small currents of warmer rising air can interact with the cooler mist. With just the right little differences in airflow, that mist can start rotating, making the invisible movement of the air suddenly visible.

Basically…

the river was showing us its own tiny mist whirlwinds. 😍

And THAT is exactly why we say:

Slow down. The river will show you…

Because if we’d been worried about getting from A to B, we probably would have paddled straight past it.

Instead, we stopped.

We watched.

And for a few minutes, the Pioneer River put on a show none of us expected. 💛🛶

🐸 STAFF ANNOUNCEMENT — MEET KEVIN 🛶

It appears Platypus Adventures has acquired a new staff member.

Meet Kevin — our official Kayak Inspector. 😂

For the last THREE launches in a row, Kevin has been found hiding somewhere in or around the kayaks before we’ve hit the water.

Once? Coincidence.

Twice? Suspicious.

Three times? Mate, you work here now. 🤣

Today Kevin took his duties particularly seriously and was discovered halfway down a kayak drain hole, apparently carrying out a very thorough pre-launch inspection.

His current responsibilities include:

🐸 Inspecting kayaks before launch
🐸 Hiding in increasingly ridiculous places
🐸 Supervising equipment preparation
🐸 Attempting to score free trips down the Pioneer River
🐸 Looking innocent when discovered

So we’d officially like to welcome Kevin the Kayak Inspector to the Platypus Adventures team.

No idea who hired him.

Paddy is demanding answers.

PAM says there’s no paperwork.

And Kevin isn’t talking. 😂🐸

Slow down. The river will show you… apparently it’ll also provide staff. 💚🛶

🦎 APPARENTLY THE RIVER HAS BEEN LISTENING… 😂

Not too long ago, we were talking about the wildlife we see along the Pioneer River.

Lexie — our unofficial behind-the-scenes Platypus Adventures sidekick — mentioned water dragons.

My response was basically:

“No Lexie. We don’t have water dragons here.”

I was quite confident about it too. 😂

Well…

Apparently the Pioneer River heard me.

Because on this morning’s tour, after seeing our platypus, enjoying the gorgeous mist, we paddled a little further and looked up into the trees.

And there he was.

🦎

A WATER DRAGON.

Not hiding.

Not questionable.

Not even particularly subtle.

Just stretched out across a branch like he’d been waiting for us.

I told our guests the whole story.

Naturally, they found this hilarious and were very quick to point out:

“So… you were wrong.” 😂

Yes.

Yes, I bloody was. 🤦‍♀️😂

Somewhere, Lexie is feeling extremely smug right now.

And somewhere on the Pioneer River, a water dragon is probably thinking:

“No water dragons, hey? Hold my beer.” 🍺🦎😂

Honestly, today the river gave us everything.

Platypus. 🦆
Mist. 🌫️
A crocodile-shaped log. 🐊🌳
And one very well-timed water dragon. 🦎

We always say:

Slow down. The river will show you…

Apparently sometimes it also likes to prove you wrong. 😂💛

🐊 THE PIONEER RIVER FILES: THE MIRANI CROCODILE INCIDENT 🐊

Picture this…

Early morning on the Pioneer River. 🛶

Mist hovering over the water.
Everything beautifully still.
Platypus popping up here and there.
Our guests enjoying a peaceful morning paddle.

And then…

👀 WHAT. IS. THAT?!

Through the mist, there it was.

A long, dark shape gliding — or at least appearing to glide — across the water.

Low profile.
Something that looked suspiciously like a head.
And from a distance…

IT LOOKED LIKE A BLOODY CROCODILE. 😳🐊

Now, there are two types of people in this situation.

There are sensible people who think:

“Perhaps we should maintain a safe distance until we know what that is.”

And then…

there’s John.

Who apparently thought:

“Interesting. Better paddle directly towards it.” 🛶😂

Meanwhile, from my kayak:

“DUDE! I WILL KILL YOU IF THAT’S A CROC!”

Which, looking back, may have been a slightly redundant threat considering the circumstances. 😂😂😂

Closer we went.

The mysterious creature remained completely still.

Closer again…

Still nothing.

Until finally, the terrifying beast revealed itself.

🌳

A LOG.

A really, REALLY convincing log. 😂

So we can officially report that today’s Platypus Adventures tour included:

🦆 Platypus sightings ✔️
🌫️ Beautiful misty river ✔️
🛶 Gorgeous morning paddle ✔️
🐊 Crocodile sighting ❌
🌳 Crocodile-shaped log ✔️
🤦‍♀️ John voluntarily paddling towards a suspected crocodile ✔️✔️✔️

Just another completely normal morning on the Pioneer River. 😂

And this is exactly why we say…

Slow down. The river will show you…

Sometimes it just has a sense of humour. 😂🌿🛶

Sometimes a review lands a little differently… ❤️

And this one got me. I may have even had a little tear reading it. 🥹

When we started Platypus Adventures, we wanted it to be about so much more than simply getting in a kayak and counting platypus.

We wanted people to slow down.

To notice the mist dancing across the water.
To watch the sun come up over the river.
To hear the birds waking up.
To notice the little things happening around them that are so easy to miss when we’re rushing through life.

And yes… sometimes the river decides to completely show off and throws 30+ platypus into the mix. 😂🦆

But this review meant so much because Sarah & Dustin didn’t just see the platypus.

They got it.

They experienced exactly what we hoped Platypus Adventures could be.

“You could tell they genuinely love what they do, and they made the whole experience so special.”

We really do. ❤️

We love this river. We love learning about the incredible animals that call it home. And we absolutely love being able to share a little piece of it with the people who climb into a kayak with us.

To hear that it was “one of the most memorable experiences and something we’ll be talking about for a long time”…

Well… that got me. 🥹

Thank you so much, Simonstravels12, for your beautiful words and for spending your morning on the river with us.

Reviews like this remind us why we’re doing this.

🌿 Slow down. The river will show you…

Before we launched this morning, I did our usual safety briefing and told our guests something that sits at the heart of Platypus Adventures:

“Our philosophy is simple — slow down, and the river will show you.”

Don’t rush.

Look around.

Listen.

Sometimes the things you remember most aren’t necessarily the things you came looking for.

And wow… did the river prove that today. 💛

Of course, we saw our beautiful platypus. 🦆

But we also watched the morning mist floating across the water as the sun came through, creating these incredible little spirals of mist that seemed to dance their way towards the sky. 🌫️☀️

We spotted a suspicious shape through the mist that had us wondering for a moment whether we were looking at a crocodile… 😂🐊
(Spoiler alert: the terrifying beast was a log.)

And then, after I had VERY confidently told Lexie recently that we don’t see water dragons along our stretch of river…

There was one.

Stretched out on a branch as if the river had personally arranged his appearance just to prove me wrong. 😂🦎

We later discovered that one of our guests’ daughters is a massive water dragon fan, which somehow made that unexpected sighting even more special.

But my favourite part came at the end of the tour.

Our guests mentioned what I’d said before we launched.

They told us they were so glad I’d said to slow down and let the river show you, because that’s exactly what they’d done…

and look at everything we’d seen.

That one stayed with me. 🥹

Because “Slow down. The river will show you…” has always been more than just our tagline.

It’s what we want Platypus Adventures to be.

Yes, we absolutely love finding platypus.

But it’s also the mist on the water.
The birds overhead.
The reflections in the trees.
The unexpected water dragon.
The suspiciously crocodile-shaped log. 😂

It’s noticing the things we normally move too quickly to see.

Today the river didn’t just show us the platypus.

It showed us exactly why we started Platypus Adventures. 💛

🛶 Slow down. The river will show you…
