If I asked you the first thing that came into your mind if I said... "Bundaberg" and you answered anything other than "Rum" Some may consider you Un-Australian.

Bundaberg distillery was founded in 1888 and is one of Australia oldest distilleries.

But there is actually a lot more to Bundaberg than just rum. Bundy is a regional city surrounded with rural farms growing all manner of fruit and veg. Bundy has rich red volcanic soil and is approximately 15 minutes from the surrounding coastal settlements of Bargara, Burnett and Elliott Heads.

The weather has been warm during the day 24* but can cool off at night.

Bundaberg is also known as the tomato capital of Australia.
It's the largest macadamia-producing region in Australia. They also grow Berries, Avocados, Lychees, Melons, Passionfruit, Figs, Mandarins and other citrus, Capsicums, Chilies, Zucchini, Sweet potatoes, Beans, Snow peas, Brussels Sprouts, Pineapples, Cattle and Ginger (they also have the Bundaberg Ginger Beer factory). Most of which can be purchased at roadside stalls.

Did I mention Sugar Cane? after all they need to get Black Strap Molasses from somewhere to make the world famous Bundy Rum. 😁

Heading north from Atherton we stopped for a night at Mt Carbine, the location of an old tungsten mine. The hotel is closed, the caravan park which, during the mines operation had a functioning huge L shaped swimming pool complete with a diving board, a tennis court and a large recreation room with pool tables, all now dilapidated and no longer usable. They did however have great ironbark firewood, so after settling in, we lit a fire and sat around it for the evening.
The next day we continued to Cooktown which is about 330km by road north of Cairns. Cooktown is remote but due to it's history and geography is interesting. Weather was fine and clear ranging from 20 to 28 degrees every day. We also drove up to Elim Beach about another hour north. Elim Beach is on Hope Vale Aboriginal land. We paid our respects to the elder present, ($10.00 per car as the sign said we must), to our disillusionment we never received a welcome to country. They must keep that for the football, office meetings, Qantas flights, etc etc and city folk, not for when you actually visit their (our) country. Elim Beach has a great camp area right on the beach. Driving up the beach we visited the coloured sands and all present agreed that it is more spectacular than the coloured sands on Rainbow Beach near Noosa.
