If you're planning your first 4wd trip to Fraser Island, now named K'gari, here's some basic things you should know. ๐
It's really a lot easier than you're imagining. ๐
You will need a 4wd ๐ป, you don't need anything particularly fancy but a 4wd and bring some recovery tracks, a tyre pressure gauge and a fold up shovel will do the trick if you do happen to find yourself buried in the sand. ๐
A tip on getting bogged. If you find you can't move, stop revving the engine. Spinning the tyres will just bury yourself deeper and make it much harder to get yourself out.
There's almost always someone who's kind enough to help if you get in any trouble so don't stress. ๐
2 options to get here, River Heads near Hervey Bay or Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach. ๐
The main differences are:
You have to book for the River Heads barge, at Inskip you turn up any time of the day and drive on.
River Heads barge takes 45-50 minutes, Inskip Point is 10 minutes
Cost at River Heads barge is around $320, cost at Inskip Point is $150
From River Heads you arrive on Fraser Island at Kingfisher Resort and if staying on the Eastern Beach you drive for another 50 -60 minutes across the island to Eurong.
From Inskip Point you land at Hook Point, the very southern tip of Fraser Island and drive up the beach. It takes about 35-40 minutes to Eurong at low tide. ๐
Tyre pressure needs to be deflated to 20psi.
Eli Creek can sometimes be impassable at High tide.
Travelling the island is all about tides. Drive as close to low tide, ideally always within 3 hours either side of Low and organise to be walking, hiking, exploring, fishing, swimming and eating over the high tide period. ๐ฃ๐จโ๐ฆฏ๐
Do not try to get close to a Dingo, don't try to interact with it, don't feed it, leave it alone, keep your distance and use your zoom to get closer photos.
Once again, Leave it Alone. ๐ซต
Must see places are
Lake McKenzie
Eli Creek
Ch*****ne Pools
Maheno Wreck
Also try to see the western beach at Woralie, do the walk into Lake Wabby, check out the Rock Pools at Waddy Point and admire the inland rainforest. ๐
Drone rules apply on Fraser Island
You must be aware of and comply with all CASA laws plus you can not fly above campgrounds and you can no longer fly a Drone at Lake McKenzie
No fires ๐ฅ are allowed on Fraser except at specific campgrounds or in private rental houses.
Dogs and pets are not allowed on the island. If a Dingo gets hold of your pet it will be goodnight nurse and you'll receive a large fine.
Fraser Island is National Park.
Police live on Fraser Island and are very active so apply all driving laws as applied and as you would normally. ๐ฎโโ๏ธ๐
There is only Telstra phone coverage around some of the local townships, otherwise expect to have no or very limited coverage.
Get up early and witness the magic of a Fraser Island sunrise and don't miss a Sunset from Kingfisher Jetty or the western beach ๐
They are extraordinary ๐
It's really not that hard, for your first time just avoid driving 2 hours either side of High tide, get your tyre pressures right and enjoy getting away. ๐
Have a great time.
