🏗️ Meekatharra: Mining Tech Through the Ages
From its first stamp in 1901 to its final crush in 1987, the Meekatharra State Battery produced over 208,000 ounces of gold from 290,000+ tons of ore.
More than just a machine — it was the beating heart of WA’s goldfields for generations.
A lifeline for the “little guy,” the battery gave lone prospectors and battlers a way to have their hard-won ore processed, especially through the tough times — the Depression, two World Wars, and the gold downturns of the ’40s and ’50s.
⚙️ Steam, steel, and raw grit —
Stampers slammed ore into dust while hopeful miners watched, waiting to see if their toil would bear gold.
As technology evolved, ball mills, rod mills, and Berdan pans took over, changing the way gold was crushed and separated.
This site in Meeka still holds remnants of it all — a glimpse into the evolution of mining and the resilience of those who built the town around it.
