π¨ ATTENTION INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: New 485 Visa Rules Are Now Live! Effective 6 Feb 2026π¨ - Repost
Planning to use two or more courses to qualify for your Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) Visa? If so, you need to read this immediately. A critical policy change became effective on 6 Feb 2026 and it could determine whether your visa gets granted or refused. π¦πΊ
The "Mind the Gap" Rule: Whatβs Changed? π€
In the past, the timeline between finishing one course and starting another was a bit of a grey area. Not anymore. To meet the Australian Study Requirement using multiple qualifications, the government now expects a tight study schedule.
Here it is in simple terms:
If you finish Course A and move to Course B, you must start that second course in either the same academic year or the very next academic year.
What if you need a longer break? π
If you have a gap longer than that, you arenβt necessarily disqualified, but there is a catch:
The break must be officially approved by your education provider.
The approval usually requires "Compassionate or Compelling" reasons
The Bottom Line: You can no longer take "unauthorized" years off between studies and expect them to count toward your 485 visa.
Are You Affected? Letβs Check! β
Ask yourself these three questions:
Did I complete a Diploma and then wait 2 years to start my Degree?
Is my next course starting way later than the "following academic year"?
Do I have written proof from my school for any study breaks I've taken?
If you're unsure how your specific timeline fits into this new 06 Feb policy, don't guess.
