The gear matters as much as the water.

We take a fair bit of pride in how the boats and kit are set up - everything maintained properly, nothing left to chance. When you're on the water for a full day, the little details make a real difference to the experience.
Cheers Ross.

A Tuesday throwback to the 4:30am start on Penstock Lagoon, which provided one of the best catches from previous seasons (well worth the 9+min battle too!).

It was a morning filled with multiple platypus cruising through the shallows, a stunning sunrise backdrop and some excellent fishing conditions to suit.

The Trout Tales team hope you get to enjoy a little more daylight every day from now - tight lines.

A few aerial frames from recent season that are worth a second look 👀

Tassie has a way of delivering scenery that stops you mid-cast. The light on the Central Highlands in early morning, a still lagoon before the wind comes up, the last colours of an autumn afternoon on the water - it's the kind of thing that's hard to describe to someone who hasn't been there, and completely obvious to anyone who has.

Nine months, a lot of kilometres, and no shortage of reasons to come back in next season!

Tasmania is a brilliant place to visit at any time of year, and if you are planning a trip around the fly fishing season there is plenty worth doing beyond the water.

A few things we always recommend to visiting anglers:

- The Tasman Peninsula is about an hour from Hobart and worth a full day - Port Arthur, the sea cliffs, and some incredible coastal walks
- MONA is unlike any gallery you have been to before and well worth the ferry trip across the river
- The Huon Valley south of Hobart has some of the best produce in the country - cider, cheese, berries, and local restaurants
- If you are heading to the highlands for fishing, the drive itself through the Derwent Valley is beautiful and worth taking your time with

Planning a Tassie trip? We are always happy to share recommendations. Drop us a message.

Knowing the water makes all the difference.

Tassie's highland lakes can be demanding - fish that are selective, conditions that change quickly, and a lot of water to read. Having guides who've spent years on these lakes means you spend less time guessing and more time with a bend in the rod.

Cheers Glenn. Link if you'd like to see what a guided day looks like: https://www.trouttalestasmania.com.au/book-trout-fishing-tasmania

Winter is fast approaching and the Trout Tales beanie is back in the shop 🧢

Designed with the Tassie climate in mind and finished with the Trout Tales logo, it is the kind of thing you will end up wearing everywhere - not just on the water.

A bit of down time here at Trout Tales HQ as we debrief from the 2025/26 season 😮‍💨

What a season it was too - from a cracker opening weekend at Penstock with Nick hooking up early on some healthy browns, right through to the final days of the season in late April.

The highland lakes fished well across the board, Little Pine had a real resurgence that was great to see, and the dry fly action mid-season was as good as it gets in Tassie.

We've put together a full season recap on the blog - worth a read if you want to relive the highlights before the 2026/27 planning begins.

If Currawong Lakes has been on your radar, a handful of the 2026/27 departures are already filling up 🎣

The package includes pickup from Hobart, 4 nights on-site accommodation at the property, 3 days of guided fly fishing across three private lakes, and all meals catered.

The fishing focuses on dry fly and sight fishing, with hatches of Red Spinners, Blue Damsels and midges drawing trout to the surface throughout the season.

January is sold out and February and March have limited spots remaining. Six departures run from November through April. Here's a little bit of what to expect...

All the details are on the website - www.trouttalestasmania.com.au/package/currawong-lakes. Tight lines, Matt.

While the 2025/26 season is done, the gear isn't 🧤

The off-season is a great time to do tasks such as:
- go through your fly box
- look over waders and boots for holes and repairs
- check over your rod and reel and
- make sure everything's in order before August.

A few minutes now saves a frustrating start to opening weekend.

The Trout Tales online shop carries a range of flies and gear curated specifically for Tassie conditions - a good starting point if you're building out the kit ahead of 2026/27. Restock now at https://www.trouttalestasmania.com.au/shop
