Cruising through the Castles of the Middle Rhine with Viking River Cruises has been one of the highlights of this trip. For around 64 kilometres, it feels like every bend in the river reveals another castle sitting high on a hill overlooking the vineyards and little villages below.

Some are beautifully preserved, others are just ruins, but it's hard not to imagine the history they have seen over the centuries. I spent a lot of time up on the sun deck (some times it rained but the valley needs it so no complaints) just watching them go by and taking far too many photos!

This section of the Rhine is easy to see why it's so popular. The scenery is amazing, the villages are picture-perfect, and there is always something new to spot around the next corner.

Würzburg yesterday and Wertheim today. From the glamour of red carpets, gold leaf and grand palaces, to the charm of ancient castle ruins overlooking the river. Two very different towns, each with their own story to tell.

Yesterday was all about elegance and opulence, while today was spent wandering through the beautiful ruins high above Wertheim, taking in the views and soaking up centuries of history. One of the things I love most about travelling through Europe is how quickly the scenery and atmosphere can change from one destination to the next.

What a surprising town Bamberg has been. With its stunning historic buildings, charming streets and unique smoky beer, it has been a wonderful place to explore. The shops are full of character, the restaurants are excellent, and everywhere you turn there is something interesting to discover.

It’s easy to see why this beautiful town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A perfect place to slow down, wander the streets, enjoy a local beer and soak up the atmosphere. Definitely a highlight of our travels so far. 🍺🏰✨

A few days in Passau and a bus trip to Regensburg have been a wonderful part of our trip so far. We enjoyed an e-bike ride along the Inn River in Passau, plus walking tours through both Passau and Regensburg.

Both cities are full of history, beautiful old buildings and charming streets, with so many stories from centuries gone by. It’s been a great way to slow down a little, take in the scenery and learn more about this fascinating part of Germany.

Oh Vienna… what a beautiful day we had. ☀️
The weather was absolutely perfect, a beautiful 22 degrees, making it such a lovely day to be outside exploring this amazing city.

We enjoyed Vienna coffee, delicious Mozart torte, a classic carriage ride through the streets, and of course finished the day with a traditional Wiener Schnitzel.

Vienna really does have a charm all of its own, elegant buildings, beautiful history, wonderful food and that relaxed café culture everywhere you go. Feeling very grateful to be experiencing it all. ❤️

We are now onboard one of the newest longships for Viking River Cruises, the Viking Eldir.

First impressions are that everything feels very fresh and modern, with a noticeably different look compared to some of the older longships. The top sun deck is probably the biggest change we noticed straight away, with new lounges and sun beds giving it a really relaxed and stylish feel.

We have a French Balcony room which, compared to an ocean cruise ship balcony cabin, is definitely smaller — but it’s very functional and comfortable for river cruising. Honestly, you don’t spend a lot of time in the room anyway when there’s so much scenery, history, and beautiful towns passing by outside.

Yesterday was spent visiting Citadella and the museum inside, learning about the long fight this city and country have endured over the centuries to claim their independence from other nations. The history here is incredibly powerful and gives you a much deeper appreciation of Hungary’s resilience and spirit.

Our last day in Budapest today we visited the moving Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial, dedicated to those who were shot along the Danube River during World War II. It’s a simple but deeply emotional memorial and one that leaves a lasting impression.

We had a great day wandering around Buda Castle or Buda Palace, depending on who you’re talking to 😊

The Castle hop-on hop-off bus, this is not the big red bus that most people think of, this is specifically for the castle village area it was a great idea and definitely saved the legs a bit, although there’s still plenty of walking to do around the different areas that it stops at.

The castle itself is currently undergoing renovations, and you can really see from my photos just how amazing the restoration will be once it’s finished. The mix of old history and the work being done to bring it back to life is really impressive.

We’re currently staying at the lovely InterContinental Budapest right on the Danube, and tomorrow we get to explore then on Thursday we begin cruising our way through Europe.
