๐ฆ๐บ Australiaโs Skilled Migration Direction for 2026โ2027
Australiaโs skilled migration direction is becoming clearer for the 2026โ2027 program year.
Based on early public reports from the recent Subclass 189 invitation round, the most visible priority areas appear to include:
โ
Healthcare and nursing
โ
Education
โ
Construction trades
โ
Engineering
โ
Science, environment and research
โ
Community and social services
We are also seeing growing attention around areas such as environmental science, biotechnology, food technology, statistics, telecommunications engineering, spatial science, social work and allied health.
However, it is important to remember that the recent Subclass 189 invitation information currently circulating is based on reported results and should not be treated as the final official Department of Home Affairs occupation cut-off list.
Now, looking at the 2026โ2027 Permanent Migration Program, the total planning level remains at 185,000 places. The Skill stream remains the major focus, with 132,240 places.
The key changes include:
๐ Employer Sponsored places increased from 44,000 to 58,040
๐ Skilled Independent places, including Subclass 189, increased from 16,900 to 21,090
๐ State and Territory Nominated places increased to 35,500
๐ Regional places reduced significantly from 33,000 to 14,110

This shows a clear shift towards skilled migrants who can fill genuine workforce shortages, particularly applicants with strong English, a valid skills assessment, relevant experience, and employer or state/territory support.
The reduction in Regional places also means applicants should not rely only on regional pathways. A strong PR strategy may need to consider multiple options, including Subclass 189, Subclass 190, Subclass 491, employer sponsorship and occupation-specific state requirements.
If you are planning for Australian PR, early preparation is very important.
Start building your points, prepare your documents, check your skills assessment pathway, improve your English score, monitor state nomination requirements, and choose your occupation pathway carefully.
