Whroo, a Spot Full of History ⛏️🌿

Whroo Historic Area is a hidden gem for history lovers, located roughly 1–2 hours from Melbourne. Once a thriving gold rush township, Whroo grew around Victoria’s largest open-cut gold mine at Balaclava Hill and today it’s a fascinating place to explore what’s left behind.

You can easily spend a full weekend wandering old relics, walking historic tracks, and capturing unique photography spots throughout the area.

A must visit is the old cemetery, where you can step back in time and reflect on the lives of those who lived through Victoria’s gold mining era.

Barmah National Park is one of Victoria’s most iconic river camping destinations, sitting along the mighty Murray River and surrounded by the world’s largest river red gum forest.

Just around 3 hours from Melbourne, this area is perfect for a weekend escape filled with slow mornings, campfire nights, fishing, birdwatching, and exploring the quiet creeks and riverbanks that weave through the forest.

Find your own spot along the river or set up near one of the many secluded camping areas and just switch off for a while.

Bear Gully Campground 🌊⛺

Bear Gully Campground is one of those hidden gems tucked along Victoria’s rugged coastline, surrounded by wildlife and just a short drive from Melbourne.

Located within Cape Liptrap Coastal Park, it’s around 40 minutes from Inverloch and roughly 1 hour from Wilsons Promontory National Park, making it the perfect coastal escape.

With 32 campsites available (some suitable for small caravans and camper trailers, but best suited to tents), it’s an ideal spot to unwind, explore the coastline, and enjoy the peaceful surrounds.

Bindaree Falls, Vic High Country 💧🌿

There aren’t many waterfalls in Victoria where you can walk directly behind the falls, but this is one of them!

Bindaree Falls is an iconic waterfall located on the western side of the Victorian High Country, not too far from Mansfield.

With a short 450m return walk, you can soak in the cool spray from the falls on a hot summer’s day, or enjoy the moss-covered rocks surrounding the falls after a good drop of rain.

Not too far from Marysville, along the Marysville–Woods Point Road, you’ll come across a small little parking area where a short 550m forest walk leads you to Cora Lynn Cascades, a hidden little gem tucked away in the bush ✨

Billy Goat Bluff Track, An ICON of Victoria 🌲🤩

One of the most iconic tracks in the High Country, Billy Goat lives up to its name with steep pinches, loose rock, and tight switchbacks that demand full attention the entire way up. Starting near Dargo, the climb quickly turns into a proper test of both driver and vehicle, with narrow sections carved into the mountainside and incredible drop offs that make you appreciate every careful line you pick.🚙

At the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping alpine views that make the struggle worth it, rugged ridgelines, endless forest, and that feeling of being completely off the grid. It’s one of those tracks that reminds you why the High Country is so legendary for 4WDing. If you’ve got the experience and a capable setup, it’s an unforgettable drive.

Our first major trip together where we hitched a ride on the Spirit Of Tassie and explored Tasmania for the first time, winding through places like Bay of Fires and Mount William National Park with no real plans, just chasing the next view
