Australia's migration controls get even tougher 🚨
The Labor government is taking aim at working holidaymaker visas as part of its push to rein in net migration.

From July this year, working holidaymaker visa rules have tightened considerably 📉
New first-time applications from the 24 capped countries have been marked as "Paused" and cannot be lodged at this time. For uncapped countries, applications are still open, but processing has slowed way down. No official restart date has been announced – keep an eye on the Home Affairs quota page for updates.

❗The reason for this move is clear:
There are currently over 225,000 backpackers in Australia – the highest on record for this time of year. In 2024–25, they made up nearly one-fifth (17.5%) of net overseas migration.
To hit the target of bringing net migration down to 225,000 within two years, the Labor government is using working holidaymaker visas as a quick way to curb migration figures.

Fees for first‑time Working Holidaymaker Visa applications have risen to AUD 840, while second and third visas have jumped to AUD 1,000 – a substantial increase in application costs.
