Bagpipers marched through the ballroom. Motorbikes became part of the stage. Madame Butterfly brought an entirely different theatrical world into the room. Performers appeared above the guests, across the dancefloor and throughout Crown Palladium.

On paper, those ingredients should not belong together.

That was precisely the challenge.

Trumpet turned them into one evolving experience, building pace, surprise and spectacle around the guests while keeping the purpose of the evening at its heart, raising support for Make-A-Wish and its work creating life-changing wishes for children facing serious illness.

Because great event direction is not about having more ideas.

It is knowing how to make wildly different ideas feel inevitable once they come together.

Name another gala that could bring together a procession of bagpipers, roaring motorbikes, Madame Butterfly, aerial performance, live music and theatrical spectacle, then somehow make the whole thing feel like one seamless evening.

That was the 2006 Make-A-Wish Foundation Wish Ball at Melbourne’s Crown Palladium.

This was not entertainment dropped into a ballroom between courses. The entire night was conceived as a show, with each performance changing the energy of the room and leading naturally into the next.

Bold, theatrical and gloriously unexpected.

Nearly twenty years later, it still looks like an event you would want an invitation to today.

Beauty has more power when it means something.

Behind the spectacle was the work of Lighthouse Foundation, supporting young people impacted by homelessness and trauma with the care, stability and therapeutic support needed to rebuild their lives.

That purpose gave the evening its emotional centre.

The performances, the theatricality, the darkness, the light, the scale of Palladium and the intimacy within it all worked together to create something that felt bigger than a gala dinner.

It felt transporting.
It felt generous.
It felt alive.
And perhaps that is why, all these years later, it still feels remarkably current.

There are nights you remember because of what happened.
And then there are nights you remember because of how they felt.
The Lighthouse Foundation Gala at Crown Palladium in 2009 was one of those nights.

Icy blue light, white against darkness, movement through shadow, flashes of silver, candlelight, smoke and performance all combining to create something otherworldly.

Not themed.
Not decorated.
Transformed.

Palladium became a dreamscape, and seventeen years later the atmosphere still lives in the photographs.

That is what great event design should do.
It should stay with you.
