The bit of Lerderderg I keep thinking about is the fungi. Last time we walked it the whole gorge was covered in them, mushrooms of every shape coming up through the wet leaf litter and out of the fallen wood, more than any of us could keep track of. We've had another good run of rain since, so I'd put money on a similar showing this time.

It's 14km along the Lerderderg River through fern gullies and eucalypt forest, following the old water races that miners cut into the gorge by hand in the 1800s. Grade 3, so uneven ground and a few spots that'll test your footing. Morning tea and lunch sorted, permits sorted, and a small group of women to walk it with.

Sunday 30 August, $89. This is a women-only hike, guided by women.

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes." Marcel Proust

Sometimes the solution is changing your surroundings.

Step away from the desk.
Leave the house.
Walk in nature, wonder at the sky, breathe in fresh air.

It's amazing how often a new perspective begins with a new location.

If you've been feeling stuck, perhaps it's time to change your environment instead of changing yourself.

Join us on the trails and see what new perspectives await you.

The Dandenong Ranges in late winter are worth getting out of the house for.

The Olinda Circuit covers 14km through the Dandenong Ranges National Park — towering Mountain Ash, fern gullies and winding trail through one of Melbourne's most accessible stretches of rainforest. Grade 3, so there's enough elevation to feel it without being a overly taxing. Done by around 2pm.

Women-only, small group, guided by women. Snacks and lunch included.

Saturday 22 August. $89. Meet at Olinda Playspace Car Park at 9am.

I love this hike, there's a bit where the rock walls close in and the track goes quiet, and I still stop and just look up for a second before we keep moving.

That's the start of the Brisbane Ranges hike we've got coming up on Sunday 9 August. 12.5km, Grade 3-4, so there's real climbing and descending in there alongside the flatter stretches, and once you're out of the gorge the ridgelines open right up. There are a couple of lookout points along the way with views across the Ranges and out to the You Yangs.

Women-only, small group, guided by women. Morning tea and lunch included.

Sunday 9 August. $89.

Details and bookings at the link in comments.

Field notes from yesterday, and I use "notes" loosely because I could identify approximately none of these.

Different shapes, different colours, one that looked like it was auditioning for a fantasy film. I spent an embarrassing amount of time crouched over a log while everyone else waited, one of the good things about small women-only hikes,
nobody's ever in a rush to get past the mushroom lady.

If you know what any of these are, genuinely, please tell me.
