The bit of Lerderderg I keep thinking about is the fungi. Last time we walked it the whole gorge was covered in them, mushrooms of every shape coming up through the wet leaf litter and out of the fallen wood, more than any of us could keep track of. We've had another good run of rain since, so I'd put money on a similar showing this time.
It's 14km along the Lerderderg River through fern gullies and eucalypt forest, following the old water races that miners cut into the gorge by hand in the 1800s. Grade 3, so uneven ground and a few spots that'll test your footing. Morning tea and lunch sorted, permits sorted, and a small group of women to walk it with.
Sunday 30 August, $89. This is a women-only hike, guided by women.
