Myrmecia piliventris colony update.

This colony, raised from a solo queen, has hit approx 35 workers now, a new batch of larvae have started to spin their cocoons, a couple of batches of larvae are at different stages of growth and there is a fresh clutch of eggs as well.

Needless to say we think they are super happy in the two Vertical Founding Cave nests with the XL Outworld on top.

New product!!

Mini Tower Feeder (5ml)
The smallest water feeder, perfect for our range of small, medium outworlds and vertical founding caves. Nice and compact, easy to use and easy to clean. It has already been included in the Small Founding Kit and the new Vertical Founding Cave Kits.

The mini tower feeders come in two options, with or without an attached feed dish. It also comes with a pre installed wick, plus two spares. This wick is made of cotton and is very good at wicking water without draining the 5ml vial.

This feeder is for water only.

Whilst it is designed for ants, it can also be used for other insects, especially jumping spiders!

There is one thing that the mighty myrmecia pyriformis (bull ant / inch ant) does really well. And that is pump out big numbers of first generation eggs.

Some of the girls we have have laid up to 18 eggs and were only caught over the last 3 weeks!

We saw a number of larger pyriformis queens this year, with many knocking on the 30mm door.

These three girls are being raised in our DillAnt Modular Series Triple Founding Den, before being moved onto their forever nests 😉.

We have been playing around with some larger outworld and founding nest ideas...
This will be much better with the double level nests for access to the hydration, but it will work.

This is the XL outworld (150x200mm), two founding nests joined in the middle. We even made a rock to cover the second nest entry hole.

Quick mock up of how it would look with a couple of expansion either side too. they were the colours we had printed so not to concerned that they don't match.

We have made up the combo, ready for the Myrmecia piliventris colony that we have raised from a single queen. There are around 15-20 workers, plus another 15-20 cocoons, plus brood... so the tub & tube setup they are in is about to become very very small.

We have opened up three chambers, left the one on the far left empty, and will transfer them soon.

The hard part with testing products is having the queens at the right stage of colony development to test it all.
Make a founding nest, chuck in a fresh caught queen, simple.
Make something bigger, you need to have a colony ready to go.

We have already made a couple of changes/tweaks since printing it out. There might be a couple more tweaks to come.

Myrmecia dispar are loving their DillAnt Vertical Founding Cave.

This little bullant species, part of the pilosula complex, is super cute.
The queen has a red node and they all have deep red/brown mandibles and legs.

They can be a little jumpy to external movement, which is common with pilosula complex species.

Making custom labelled covers for our little collection of the new Vertical Founding Cave nest/outworld combos.

If you can make something special for your own collection then why not.

Here are five of the setups. Myrmecia athertonensis, pyriformis & fulvipes, Camponotus intrepidus & suffusus. There are a few more species in these nests, which will be revealed soon!!
