After meeting Gordon the Little Penguin at Adelaide Zoo, the lion coalition dads at Monarto Safari Park, and a few more amazing fathers along the way, today it’s time to shine a light on one of the most hands-on dads in the animal kingdom – Gomez the Cotton-top Tamarin. 🐒💙

For tamarins, fatherhood is a full-time job. From just two weeks old, infants cling almost constantly to their dad’s back. Mum only takes over briefly for nursing before handing them straight back again. As the youngsters grow, Gomez even prepares their meals, peeling and mashing fruit so they can eat safely.

In 2024 Gomez became the proud father of twins. While they’re no longer riding on his back, they’re still thriving under his care. For this critically endangered species, devoted dads like Gomez play a vital role in giving the next generation the very best start in life.

Meet Salty – hand-raised, movie-star famous, and now a training pro at Adelaide Zoo.

He’s learning to follow a target, hold still on cue, and even help us check his feet (with a little help from a mirror and some fish 🐟).

Right now, he’s also showing off his best breeding season colours – pink bill, purple stripe and bright yellow eyes. All to impress the ladies 💁‍♀️

Catch Salty and his mates getting a feed every day at 2:30pm.

🐧 Gordon the Penguin Dad

This week, across both our Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park pages, we’re celebrating all the wild dads out there.

Each day we’ll spotlight an incredible father figure from the animal kingdom, sharing the fascinating, surprising and sometimes downright adorable ways they care for their young. Keep an eye on both pages as we count down to Father’s Day this Sunday.

We are starting with one of Adelaide Zoo’s most remarkable residents. Gordon the Little Penguin is one of the oldest of his kind in the world and he turns 24 this month. Over the years he has played an important role as a father, raising many chicks in our colony.

In the wild and here at the zoo, Little Penguin parenting is a true partnership. Mothers and fathers share the responsibility of incubating their eggs for around 35 days and then take turns feeding their chicks by regurgitating food. Together, they provide the nourishment and care needed for their young to grow strong and make their first splash.

Gordon’s long life and success as a dad are a wonderful reminder of just how extraordinary these tiny seabirds are.

Patagonian Cavies are one of the rare species that form lifelong monogamous pairs. Couples raise their young together in burrows dug by the female.

Here’s the incredible part – their babies are born with their eyes already open! But they’ll stay hidden away in the safety of the burrow for up to four months, where mums return daily to nurse them.

🐾 A true example of teamwork and family life in the animal world!

At 13 years old, Reba is a male Komodo Dragon who joined us from Prague in July 2024. Weighing in over 50kgs – a full 20kg heavier than our female Komodo, Cecilia and stretching more than 2 metres in length.

Komodo Dragons are the largest lizards on Earth and one of the few with a venomous bite. Despite their size, they can run up to 20km per hour and take down prey as big as deer or water buffalo. Sadly, with fewer than 1,400 adults left in the wild, they’re listed as Endangered.

We’re proud to have Reba here as an ambassador for his species and a big thank you to Ochre Digital for the incredible window wrap and signage that make his habitat even more impressive.

Adelaide Zoo is saddened to share the passing of Chappi the Hamadryas Baboon, one of our most beloved and iconic residents. After her most recent health assessment showed her age-related conditions were affecting her quality of life, the difficult decision was made to say goodbye.

Born here in 2003, Chappi was the heart of the troop. She raised her sons Tomkay and Djibouti, doted on her grandchildren Jabori and Lily as though they were her own, and delighted visitors with her sass, striking eyebrows, and cheeky habit of stuffing her cheeks with popcorn. She was named in honour of long-time primate keeper Tom Kaiwahia, who fondly called the animals “chaps.”

Chappi will be remembered as a much-loved member of Adelaide Zoo and an important ambassador for her species, helping countless visitors connect with and care about Hamadryas Baboons. She leaves behind a lasting legacy and will be deeply missed by her troop, our staff, and everyone who came to know her.

Cotton-top Tamarins are instantly recognisable with their wild white hairdos, and in the wild only the dominant pair breeds while the whole family helps raise the young. Sadly, they are critically endangered, with only around 6,000 left in the forests of Colombia.

Every visit to Adelaide Zoo helps support conservation of these incredible monkeys and many other species facing extinction. 💚

📍 Come see if you can spot the mischievous twins and their doting family next time you visit!
