On this day five years ago, Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk was infected with COVID-19 in New York. This difficult phase allowed him to reflect and question his existence, eventually giving birth to the campaign.
He has since been collecting Himalayan glacier ice inside a discarded plastic bottle to symbolize the
disappearing glaciers of Bhutan. During this time, a student in remote Bhutan gave him a letter addressed to world leaders. He promised her, saying, βI will try my best to get your message across
to the leaders or the concerned people during my journey moving forward.β
Today, as βthe messenger,β he has the bottle and the letters with him as he rides across Australia
from March 19th to April 20th, representing the voices of the Bhutanese youth and the youth worldwide in delivering their messages.
During this month-long Australia campaign, he is also raising funds for the next campaign edition. In
the next edition, Jamyang will collect glacier water from two of the worldβs seven summits: Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mt. Aconcagua in South America. The last glaciers on Mt. Kilimanjaro are
expected to disappear in the next few years, and he wants to leverage this urgency with the dying
Himalayan glaciers to call for immediate action from world leaders.
In light of this, Jamyang is well aware of the sacrifice the Bhutanese living abroad are making for their
children and families, back home. In light of this sacrifice, the campaign would like to make a humble
proposal:
If you pledge βOne Hourβ of your daily wage towards the campaign, we will release an educational
and environmental documentary series on YouTube, that the students all over Bhutan can freely access. The series covers the 2022 biking trip to Thorthormi glacier in Lunana where you will also get
to see many inspiring everyday Bhutanese who have left remarkable impacts in the community. We
will also credit your name in the upcoming documentary film, among other rewards.
