This could have ended our trip — or been a whole lot worse.

Travelling at 100 km/h, we heard a thump from the camper. I looked in the mirror and saw the passenger-side wheel wobbling violently.

All five wheel studs had sheared off. There were no wheel nuts left. Somehow, incredibly, the wheel stayed with us.

Then came the roadside repair.

More than two hours later, using the spare studs and wheel nuts we carry, David had us back together and back on the road.

Months of remote travel can be harsh on your rig. Things break. Sometimes badly. What matters is carrying the right spares, having the tools — and knowing what to do with them.

And yes, we were very, very lucky.

There’s a big difference between having a map and having a map you can rely on when the track disappears.

Mark recently completed the remote 100km Carnarvon Great Walk, where missing route markers, animal tracks and 1–1.5m grass made navigation difficult enough that the track was lost at times.

His feedback says it all:

“The offline maps in ExplorOz Traveller guided us back.”

For serious bushwalkers heading beyond the well-worn trails, detailed offline mapping can be invaluable — especially where mobile coverage is non-existent.

Meet the Yellow Kapok 🌼
Cochlospermum fraseri

A distinctive native of northern Australia, producing brilliant yellow flowers on almost leafless branches during the dry season. Swipe →

Known as galijba to Ngarinyman people of the Victoria River District, Yellow Kapok has many traditional uses.

🌿 Young taproots — eaten raw or lightly roasted
🌿 Bark — boiled to make a medicinal wash
🌿 Inner bark — used for bandages & string
🌿 Dry straight stems — used as fire-sticks

But galijba can also tell you what’s happening somewhere else… 🐊

Now the name makes sense…

Inside the green capsule are seeds surrounded by masses of fine, white cotton-like fibre.

This is the “kapok”.

As the capsule dries and splits, the fluffy fibres help disperse the seeds on the wind. Swipe →

For Ngarinyman people, galijba also signals what is happening with freshwater crocodiles:

🌼 Yellow flowers — crocodiles are laying eggs
🌱 Fruit developing — young crocs are growing inside the eggs
🤍 Capsules splitting open — the eggs are hatching

Knowledge like this is a reminder that there’s so much more to see when travelling than simply reaching the next destination.
