We really do love our job.

We are the crew behind the ExplorOz Traveller app and EOTopo maps, and we spend much of our time travelling Australia to verify roads, camps, attractions and map data so the information stays current and accurate for everyone who relies on it.

Every now and then we visit a place that completely exceeds our expectations.

Hell Hole Gorge National Park, Queensland.

These photos were taken around Hell Hole Gorge, Spencer Gorge and Powell Creek, where the campground is located.

Access requires a high-clearance 4WD, and camping fees are $7.50 per adult.

What’s the worst thing that can happen when you’re travelling remote?

You turn the key and the engine won’t start.

That’s the situation we’re dealing with right now.

Fortunately, we know what’s causing it and have a workaround that’s keeping us moving. But it’s a good reminder that even the most reliable touring vehicles can throw you a curveball when you’re a long way from help.

These photos from our charter flight yesterday (with Birdsville Aviation) show the massive flooding from the three major river systems - Diamantina, Eyre Creek, and Georgina River - currently draining into the Lake Eyre basin.

It was fascinating to fly over camps 20-22 of the Madigan Line and see the sheer volume of water in Eyre Creek to fully appreciate why crossing the Simpson Desert is not feasible. The critical Stoney Crossing point is far from viable as the photos show.

The water surrounding Big Red is creating a beautiful view with access possible both sides.

After our flight we took a drive out to Big Red and flew the drone.

There are still plenty of ways to experience this region, even if you can't cross from east to west right now.

After exploring the northern end the of Hay River Track coming into Batton Hill and spending a couple of days there verifying tracks (impassable) to Goyders Pillar we took the alternative track back out to the Plenty highway via Arthur Creek which allowed us to see where the head of the Hay River begins at the convergence of Marshall River & Arthur Creek.

We’ve never seen the sky so alive.

For almost 24 hours, hundreds of kites have circled above the Georgina River — a mesmerising mix of Whistling Kites and Black Kites, wheeling and soaring in every direction. They took a brief break overnight to roost in the trees, then were back at first light.

The river is teeming with fish and the birds are making the most of the feast. And it’s not just the kites — the number of ibis here is almost as impressive.

One of those outback moments that you can only experience when you stop and let nature come to you.

Remote travel has a way of finding the weak points in your setup.

After a rough run into Batton Hill, David spent some time checking over the rig and found an issue with our bike rack mounts.

One thing we’ve learnt over the years is that old outback junk yards can be a goldmine when you need to make a bush repair. Hidden beyond the lonely Batton Hill camp is a vehicle graveyard, along with piles of old machinery, tools and parts.

Among the wrecked cars, utes, 4WDs, pumps, generators and rusty steel lying around, David found exactly what he needed - a piece of steel that could be turned into a washer plate to strengthen the bike rack mounts and keep us moving.

Thankfully he’s never short of a bush-engineering solution.

Just another day in the desert.
