The presence of clay deposits alongside the Swan River led to the establishment of several brickworks in Belmont in the 1880s- 1890s. This is the largest remaining group of downdraught kilns in Australia, dating from 1903 - 1953. They were decommissioned in 1982 & lovingly restored in 2020 with funding from the State Government. The “Brickman” was erected in secrecy in 2020 by an unknown artist in memorial of Sir Hugh Lancelot Brisbane, for his contribution to Industry in Western Australia.

The iconic “Dingo Flour Mill” located in North Fremantle is the only remaining operating flour mill in the Perth metro area. Built in 1922, the logo was painted in 1940 by artist Les Nash for £40. The logo has been a part of Western Australian culture ever since.
