Ever heard of the town where a horse struck gold? 🐎✨

Welcome to Norseman — a small outback town with a big story. Back in 1894, prospector Laurie Sinclair discovered gold thanks to his horse, Hardy Norseman, who unearthed a nugget with its hoof. That lucky find sparked a gold rush and shaped the town’s identity ever since.

Today, Norseman sits on the edge of the breathtaking Great Western Woodlands — one of the largest remaining temperate woodlands on Earth — making it a pretty special place to explore both history and nature in one trip.

If you’re passing through, here’s what to add to your list 👇

Take in sweeping views from Beacon Hill Lookout

Snap a pic with the iconic camel statues in town

Cool off or picnic at Bromus Dam

Explore granite outcrops like Buldania Rocks (especially during wildflower season 🌸)

For a deeper dive into the region’s past, don’t miss the Dundas Coach Road Heritage Trail. This 50km loop takes you through the historic Dundas goldfields, with interpretive stops that bring early pioneer life to life. It’s an easy drive (around 1–2 hours) and a great way to experience the landscapes and stories that shaped the area.

Ready to uncover a hidden gem in Australia's Golden Outback? Add Norseman to your Western Australia itinerary 🚗💛

Where rugged coastline meets raw creativity 🌊✨

Elemental by Esperance is a 5-day road trip through one of Western Australia's most remote coastal regions, where nature and local artistry come together in unexpected ways.

In and around Visit Esperance (Kepa Kurl), makers are shaped by the landscape they call home. Along this trail, you’ll meet the people behind the work, step into their studios, kitchens, and production floors, and see how this extraordinary part of Australia's Golden Outback inspires what they create.

From sweeping coastlines to hands-on creative spaces, it’s a journey where the scenery and the stories are equally unforgettable.

📍 Local tip: This is the ultimate long weekend Esperance adventure — best explored from Thursday to Sunday. As this is regional WA, opening hours can change with the seasons, so it’s always best to check ahead before you go.

Ready to feel like you’ve landed on another planet? 🤯

Out in Australia's Golden Outback, Lake Ballard is one of those places that doesn’t quite feel real. Endless salt flats, wide open skies, and the iconic sculptures from Antony Gormley’s Inside Australia exhibit scattered across the lake make it a stop you won’t forget.

@‌julia_md_visuals shares what it’s like to camp out here, where the experience doesn’t end when the sun goes down. As night falls, the sculptures fade into the darkness and the sky takes over, with stars lighting up above (thanks to almost zero light pollution ✨).

There’s a free camping area nearby, but it can fill up quickly during school holidays and long weekends so plan ahead. There are basic facilities like toilets, but no drinking water, so come prepared.

And no two visits are the same. In summer, expect dry salt and bright, open landscapes. In winter, the lake can transform with rain and mud, adding a whole new feel to the experience. Either way, sunrise and sunset are when this place really shines.

Looking for Road Tripping Tips to help you on your next adventure into Australia’s Golden Outback. We caught up with Salty Davenport Photography to hear what it’s really like exploring Australia's Golden Outback 🚗

An adventure photographer and filmmaker, he’s spent years chasing the kind of places that take a bit of effort to reach, but are always worth it. And for him, the Golden Outback stands out as one of the wildest.

One spot that stuck? Mount Augustus.

Think ancient landscapes, a 49km loop drive with plenty of places to pull over, stretch your legs and take it all in, gorges, rock engravings and wide-open plains included. If you time it right, you might even catch wildlife moving through at sunrise or sunset.

There are plenty of ways to explore, from easy walks through river red gums to more challenging hikes (best saved for the cooler months). Or keep it simple and cool off at Cattle Pool, a permanent waterhole surrounded by birdlife.

Have you made it out to Mount Augustus, or is it still on your list? Let us know 👇

Australia's Golden Outback is officially home to TWO of Australia’s Best 100 Towns ✔️✨

Western Australia had 13 towns featured in Australian Traveller's Top 100 — with Australia's Golden Outback proudly represented by Visit Esperance and Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Coming in at #25 Visit Esperance is described as having “incredible white-sand beaches and clear turquoise waters,” with nearby Cape Le Grand National Park and the iconic Lucky Bay — famous for its beach-loving kangaroos 🦘 As panellist Catriona Rowntree notes, “it’s a long way for most of us to get to, but the effort pays off – truly breathtaking.” Brad Farmer even calls it the “gateway to the best beaches in the west.”

At #81, Kalgoorlie-Boulder brings pure “big mining energy with history.” Shaped by the 1893 gold discovery and the legendary Golden Mile, the town is rich with colonial-era architecture, character-filled pubs, and stories from its gold rush past — once home to the richest square mile on Earth.

Two towns. Two very different experiences. One unforgettable region of Western Australia.
