Ever walked through the tunnel beneath Fremantle Round House? The Whalers Tunnel was cut through the limestone of Manjaree/Arthur Head in 1837, creating a direct route between the whaling operations at Bathers Bay and the town above. The work was carried out with pickaxes, with prisoners from the Round House assisting in its construction.

Today, you can still walk straight through the tunnel from High Street to Bathers Beach, beneath WA’s oldest public building.

This is the Pilbara at its best! Kalgan Pool sits deep within the Ophthalmia Range, around a 90-minute drive from Newman, where a natural waterhole meets towering red rock and rugged bushland. It’s one of the most popular waterholes in the Shire of East Pilbara, with swimming possible when water levels allow.

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to head north and see more of WA, this might be it. Pack up the 4WD, leave Perth behind and make a road trip of it, with plenty more incredible landscapes to discover throughout the region.

There’s a reason you’ll find this impressive bronze sculpture in the middle of Guildford. Standing in Stirling Square, the 10th Light Horse Regiment Memorial honours the Western Australian soldiers and horses of the regiment, which was formed and trained in Guildford during the First World War.

Dedicated in 2023 and created by artist Charles Robb, the memorial features references to the campaigns the regiment served in, including Gallipoli, Sinai and Palestine.

Did you know one of Australia’s longest pedestrian suspension bridges is in the Avon Valley? Stretching 117 metres across the Avon River, Northam’s Suspension Bridge has been a local landmark since 1975 and gives you a lovely view over the river as you make your way across.

Keep an eye out for Northam’s famous white swans while you’re there - the Avon River at Northam is recognised as Australia’s only natural breeding ground for them. From the bridge, you can continue through Bernard Park for a riverside walk or picnic, with the Visit Northam Visitor Centre only a couple of minutes away.

It's amazing what you can see once the lights go out. Just 90 minutes north of Perth, Guilderton's dark skies make it a spectacular place to see the Milky Way on a clear night.
