Ever walked through the tunnel beneath Fremantle Round House? The Whalers Tunnel was cut through the limestone of Manjaree/Arthur Head in 1837, creating a direct route between the whaling operations at Bathers Bay and the town above. The work was carried out with pickaxes, with prisoners from the Round House assisting in its construction.
Today, you can still walk straight through the tunnel from High Street to Bathers Beach, beneath WA’s oldest public building.
