Because let's be honest… going “home” to see family is incredibly important but it isn't always the most relaxing holiday.

You've got the long-haul flights, jet lag, luggage, the cost and then the pressure to squeeze year's worth of family catch-ups into a tiny window of time.

If you're living in Perth while your family is back in Ireland or the UK there's always lot of travelling involved.

And sometimes what you really want isn't another hectic trip home.

You want your kids to have proper time with their grandparents. You want your parents to make memories with the grandkids. You want everyone together without spending the whole trip rushing around trying to see everyone.

So I started thinking…

What if you didn't have to go all the way home every time you wanted proper quality time together?

What if you met somewhere in the middle instead?

Singapore really caught my attention as a meeting point. Your family flies from Ireland/UK, you fly from Perth, and you all meet in Singapore.

Then you could step onto a Southeast Asia cruise together, unpack once and actually spend your time enjoying each other.

No one is stuck playing host, cooking, or trying to fit everyone into their home.

I've been looking at a few Princess Cruises sailings across late 2026 and 2027, with itineraries through destinations like Malaysia and Thailand.

This isn't about finding a generic bargain.

It's about finding a better way to spend the time and money you're already planning to invest in seeing the people you love.

And because it's a concept rather than one fixed deal, we can look at different dates, routes and cabin options to see what actually fits your family.

But sometimes, it isn't the only way to spend meaningful time with the people you love.

Meeting somewhere else could give everyone the chance to travel, explore somewhere new and actually enjoy time together.

Sometimes, you just need to look at the journey differently.

You don't have to fill every day of your holiday to make it a good one.

Especially when you're travelling as a family.

One day might be exploring somewhere new.
The next might be pool, lunch and absolutely nothing else. 😌

And that's okay.

When I plan a trip, I think about the balance, enough to keep everyone interested, but enough downtime that you actually come home feeling rested.

Because sometimes the best part of a holiday is having nowhere you need to be.

So why not make a little more of it?

Instead of simply connecting through somewhere, you could spend a few days in Bangkok before continuing on to Europe.

Great food.
A completely different culture.
A few days to explore.
And a chance to break up the long journey.

Of course, whether Bangkok makes sense depends on your dates, flights and overall itinerary, but that's exactly why I like looking at the bigger picture when planning travel.

Flying from Australia to Europe can be a long journey.

But what if you didn't have to think of the stopover as simply waiting for your next flight?

A few nights somewhere new can turn a long journey into another part of the adventure.

Explore a new city.
Try somewhere you've never been.
Take a few days to slow down before continuing home.

And sometimes, adding a stopover can make an itinerary feel completely different.

It's one of those things I love looking at when planning travel; not just how you get there, but what else could make the journey work better for you.

I look at the bigger picture your dates, your plans, your family, your budget, your connections and what you actually want from the trip.

Sometimes that means finding a better flight.

Sometimes it means adding a stopover, changing the route or finding a destination that works better for everyone.

And sometimes, it's simply taking all those moving pieces off your plate.

That's what thoughtful travel planning looks like.

Well, that was totally emotional!! 🩷

Watching our nephew compete in Junior Eurovision all the way from Australia

Hearing him speak so openly about being bullied because he isn’t the “typical boy” who plays sports, because he loves to sing, was hard to hear.
Seeing him have the courage to be completely himself and follow his passion makes us so incredibly proud.

We just wish we could be there in person to give him the biggest hug and celebrate with the rest of our family.

This is the bittersweet reality of living abroad feeling an overwhelming sense of pride and happiness for the people you love, while wishing you were standing right there beside them.

So proud of you, Caleb. Keep being you. 🇮🇪✨

Looking for a Singapore trip that gives you a little more breathing room?

Sentosa can be a great option for families who want a mix of relaxation, activities and easy access to the city.

You’ve got beaches, family attractions, plenty of places to eat and a good choice of accommodation, but you're also close enough to head into Singapore and experience everything the city has to offer.

Which is one of the reasons I like looking at destinations like this as part of a bigger itinerary, rather than treating every holiday as simply fly in → stay → fly home.

For example, Singapore could work beautifully as a stopover before continuing somewhere else in Asia, or you could combine a few nights in the city with time on Sentosa.

It can give you the best of both worlds: a bit of city, a bit of holiday and plenty of options for everyone.

And sometimes that's exactly what makes an itinerary work.

The destination itself is important, but so is how it fits into the journey as a whole.
