We held two of our Solid Science Workshops over the weekend with the City of Wanneroo!

The first was the Kaarl - Fire Workshop for koorlangkas. They learned about hot and cool fires, why boodja needs fire and how different plants interfere with the fire triangle to make more fire or reduce fire before making artworks to show the different fire types!

We then held our first ever adults workshop, which was our Working With Country Workshop where they learned all about native yam farms and how Noongar people traditionally caught fish! They then recreated these landscapes using playdough - which they loved!! ’s

Ngaangk - this is what we call the sun in Noongar. ☀️
This is also the word for Mother.

Languages share so much of a peoples' worldview and the values within it. What does it mean to have the same word for sun as it is for Mother?

To all the Ngaangks - we hope you have a lovely day on Sunday.

And for the Ngaangks without their koorlangkas, and the koorlangkas without their ngaangks (even the grown ones), for whatever reason that may be - we send our deepest love to you. 💗

We work with many organisations who hold Reconciliation Action Plans. And sure - we help to create them and draft them - but only after firstly asking - is this what the local Aboriginal community want, or is it what your organisation wants?

We've seen RAPs work wonders for some organisations, and really box others in. We're also hearing from community that sometimes RAPs aren't actually fit for purpose, or that RAPs are being entered into without community engagement. In fact - sometimes the local mob don't really want a RAP, but something longer term, with a different structure.

So we thought to ask - has your organisation thought about whether the local Aboriginal community wanted a RAP; or is there something else that would better shift the dial in your local area?

These beautiful boodalangs/ pelicans are often on the sands at Thompson Bay at Wadjemup / Rottnest Island.

They are something special 💜

We put 110% into all of our work and always ensure we tailor our workshops and training to the audience.

The latest testimonial is from the Australian Institute of International Understanding, where we held a Touch and Feel Cultural Workshop for a large group of Japanese exchange students in primary school.

We took 120 students from Murdoch University on a learning journey to understand the Aboriginal history of Wadjemup / Rottnest Island.

We spoke about what it was before colonisation, the prison era and its impacts from our worldview - and how our mob’s strength and light has persevered through it all whilst remembering the boys and men who continue to lay under the sands of Wadjemup.

How grateful we are to be able to shed light on a truth that was hidden for a long time.

We took our Touch n Feel Workshop to the koorlangkas at Perth’s Ronald McDonald House!

They tasted quandong, milyu / samphire and learned about the medicinal use of the wonnil / peppermint tree plus heaps more. We don’t think there’s enough milyu in the world for the kids there - they loved it!

Always a great gift for us to share our culture with kids, especially those that might like that little bit of extra joy as they battle bigger things 💜 Ronald McDonald House

Plenty of the smallest koorlangkas came along to the Djeran Little Hands Workshop at the City of Wanneroo Museum today! We learned about the colour nodjam / green, and how everything around us is turning nodjam. The Little Hands workshops host 5 hands on stations all linked to the current Noongar season! They even got to paint with some of the flowering trees at the moment and make their own mini koornts!

Koorda’s Crew is a small family owned business, and we’ve been a little quiet lately as we took a break to recharge our batteries and spend time with our own koorlangkas. From Cue to Karijini and Karratha, we had a great time - and wanted to share a little of that with you all. But, as of today we are back in full swing - and have been preparing for workshops with your koorlangkas today ☺️

The Illyarrie tree is in full bloom right now (that’s what we call it in Noongar). You may have heard it called the Red Capped Gum. It’s like no other Eucalyptus tree in Noongar Country, with the bright red caps bursting off to show a flurry of the yellowest flowers. Pssst…. the caps make beautiful crafting pieces. Did you know this is what we named our youngest daughter after? We named her before she was born, and she is the only child with hair as yellow as the Illyarrie 🤣. Taking living up to your name to a whole new level!!
