Slowly getting through all the maintenance following our trip. I’ve spent the last week or so tackling stuff on the van. I just wanted to take the time to say thanks to Warren from WA Caravan Alignments.

I took the BFC Yowie up to him for a wheel alignment today, he took the time to explain how he sets up his alignments to get the best stability from the van, what the benefits of bringing the van to him were vs using a mobile service & most importantly he is a perfectionist (like me) and close enough isn’t good enough….he spent the extra time to get everything bang on where he wanted it. As for the drive home, even in a gusty cross wind I could feel the van was significantly more stable.

So if you’re chasing a high quality alignment on your camper or van, I would recommend the trip to see Warren.

PS, I’m not getting any kickbacks for this post, I paid full price for Warrens time & service, but I had an experience today that genuinely impressed me and feel is worth sharing….and who knows maybe it’ll help one of you out.

Are we insane, a 2700km transit, just to start our trip? It took us 6 days to cross the Nullabor - Perth to Renmark.

We didn’t set a time frame for this section of the trip, we decided it best to travel at the speed dictated to us by the girls. But we aimed to try achieve 500kms a day.

The following is a rough schedule of how we traveled across.

Day 1 - Perth to Lake Johnson (530km)
Day 2 - Lake Johnson to Hearder Hill Rest Area (770km)
Day 3 - Hearder Hill Rest Area to Fowlers Bay (410km)
Day 4 - Rest Day in Fowlers Bay
Day 5 - Fowlers Bay to Lake Gilles (495km)
Day 6 - Lake Gilles to Renmark (500km)

Of Note: Day 2 we did 520km to Cocklebiddy during the day & 250km that night…..the girls didn’t handle the night drive as well as expected, so we didn’t try it again. Early starts are more successful.

Day 4 Rest Day was a great sanity break…definitely worth it, for ourselves and the girls, to give them a break from 5-6hrs a day in a car seat.

A few things caught us by surprise.
- Daylight savings, we weren’t prepared for 8:45pm sunsets & 8:00am sunrises, it threw the girls schedules out completely.
- The interstate quarantine requirements….check them out, & remember they exist….otherwise you’ll be turning vegetarian for a few days 🤦🏻‍♂️ (true story).
- There is honestly nothing for little kids to do across the Nullabor (ie. no playgrounds or little kid friendly activities) so be prepared with plenty of games/ entertainment yourselves.

Anyway, check out the photos & reach out if you have any questions.

First trip away in the new Bigfoot Yowie V2 17ft Hybrid was an overwhelming success. Jess found it a lot easier to pack than the camper, with more space to packing things logically instead of space consciously. Having the bit of extra room inside is invaluable, allows you to get out the elements, gives the girls a break from each other, having composite/ insulated walls was amazing for noise reduction especially at a very busy Wellington Dam over the Aus Day weekend.

I found it towed beautifully down the highway behind the cruiser, I need to be mindful that with the extra weight I can get things hotter than expect on the car, coolant, trans temps, EGT’s especially if I’m driving it hard….so a little adjustment in driving style is required. As for towing offroad it most certainly did not feel like I had a 17ft van behind me…..I would have said maybe a 14ft camper at best, the stability of the tandem axles on undulating terrain was immediately noticeable.

All in all the hybrid far exceeded our expectations and we’re very confident it is the right call to use it for our lap rather than the camper.

Side Note: Don’t get me wrong, I still love my camper and it does still have a purpose which is why is hasn’t come up for sale….but the hybrid really is a monumental step forwards.

Merry Christmas Everyone. I want to take the opportunity to quickly post and let everyone know we’re still kicking, thanks for baring with us…reflecting on 2024….what I can say…other than “let’s move on” and “it’s a story to share over a campfire & a beer”, but you know what, it won’t take much for 2025 to be a far better year for us & I’ve got that feeling it’s going to be epic.

Anyway, enjoy the break everyone, stay safe if you’re travelling and look forward to seeing you all in 2025….multiple videos are being edited as we speak & big plans are brewing.
