📍 The Ravenswood Hotel (aka “The Ravo”)

If you’re cruising south and chasing a laid-back riverside stop, The Ravenswood Hotel is a ripper spot to pull up.

Set right on the Murray River, it’s the kind of place where you can sit back, watch the boats cruise past and, if you’re lucky, catch a cheeky dolphin popping up 🐬
🍽️ Food: Proper Aussie pub classics done right — parmi’s, burgers and steak sandwiches sit proudly at the top of the menu. No fuss, just good feed.

🏍️ The vibe: A favourite stop for classic cars and motorbikes, with plenty of riders and drivers pulling in for a refreshment before hitting the road again.

🍻 Seating: Heaps of indoor and outdoor seating, plus a side bar area with a TAB for those keen on a punt.

🛝 Kids: There’s a small play area, but honestly — the kids will be stoked just running around on the grass soaking up the river views.

🎣 Make a day of it: Bring a rod and wander further down the riverbank or try your luck near the local boat ramp — prawns are a favourite in the river. Or head straight across the road to South Yunderup Park for more exploring.

A top spot for lunch, a cold drink, and an easy day out by the water.

We followed the burgers up York Street to find
**The Gaffer** 😁🍔

📍 The Gaffer Burgers & Shakes – Albany (York Street)

This place was so good we had to check it out, twice in a 7-day break… and honestly, no regrets.

We went for the Double G Burger, Ozzie Gaffer and Big Daddy Gaffer, plus kids’ meals – and it did not disappoint. Every burger was spot on, and the service was even better.

Had to grab a can of Dr Pepper, and they also offer beers on tap and bottles🍺

If you’re in Albany, The Gaffer is a must-try spot. Just expect to be full for the rest of the day🤤

Perth coastal stops 🌊🚗
We kicked off a local coastal road trip and honestly… Perth never disappoints.
Starting at Secret Harbour Beach collecting shells, then up to Point Peron for a wander. From there we headed to Rockingham Beach and stopped in for a morning coffee at Coffee Barco ☕️

Next stop was through Henderson, checking out the local industries including the Alcoa Refinery, before pulling into Woodman Point to visit Ammo Jetty and explore the parklands.

Back in the car and onto Coogee to check out the shipwreck, then over to the marina to admire the boats before cruising through South Freo and into Fremantle. Lunch was a must at Cicerello’s Fish & Chips 🐟🍟 followed by a wander through the Fremantle Markets.

We kept heading north through North Fremantle, stopped at Cottesloe Beach, then City Beach, before rolling into Scarborough for a skate, playground stop, and a Cold Rock Ice Cream 🍦

From there it was Trigg, North Beach, and a stop at Watermans Reef Observation Area, before finishing the coastal run at Hillarys Boat Harbour for a walk around and a Boost Juice.

On the way home we took the city route — stopping at South Perth Foreshore to take in the city lights and watch the jellyfish under moonlight ✨
 Final stop: Kings Park, checking out the ANZAC Memorial at night before hitting the freeway home.

📍Kojonup 🚗 A hidden gem on the way down south

If you’re cruising south, don’t just drive straight past — Kojonup is well worth the stop.

📍 Did you know?
• Kojonup sits almost halfway between Perth and Albany, making it a perfect leg-stretch stop on a long drive.
• The name Kojonup comes from an Aboriginal word believed to mean “place of stone”, reflecting the area’s deep cultural history.
• The town is part of the Great Southern region, one of WA’s most important early agricultural areas.

Kojonup Visitor & Information Centre
• Free coffee for drivers ☕
• Free snacks for the kids
• Free sanitary items for the ladies 👏
• A donation-based museum showcasing local history

From classic cars to the history of the land and Aboriginal culture, it’s a surprisingly rich stop (pics attached).

🌿 The Rose Maze Garden
• One of the largest hedge mazes in regional WA
• Includes a hidden geocache for the kids (and big kids)
• Café on site — 🍔 burger & chips for $25 and very reasonably priced

☕ Before jumping back on the road:
• Grab a coffee from the local coffee van
• Browse the antiques
• Visit the local nursery

A great reminder that some of the best travel moments come from unplanned stops and supporting small towns along the way.

📍 Acclaim Rose Gardens Beachside Holiday Park – Albany (Emu Point) 🌊🏕️

We stayed here for 1 week, and here are a few honest points if you’re thinking of staying 👇

⭐ Overall rating: 7/10

• Location: Big win. Right at Emu Point with easy beach access. You can request sites closer to the beach, and there are also beachfront cabins available.

• Overall vibe: A little more tiered / old-school compared to the big franchise parks, but it’s well presented and tidy.

• Amenities: Bathrooms have had a recent fit-out and there are plenty spread around the park.

• Wildlife: Heaps of wildlife — rabbits roaming at night (lock food away) and plenty of birdlife, including a kookaburra that’ll happily wake you up in the mornings 🐦😂

• Sites: Mix of concrete pads, grass and dirt sites.

• Roads: Unsealed roads = dust. Bring a broom/brush and vacuum for tents and vans.

• Kids: Playground is great for little ones. Rec room is fairly basic.

• Things to do: Plenty to see and do both in the park and around Albany — check out our other posts for ideas 👀

🌬️🌊 The Blowholes
📍 Torndirrup National Park, Albany WA

Fourth stop of the day ✨

Plenty of parking here, but no toilets, so plan ahead.
The walk to the Blowholes is challenging — downhill and down steps, over uneven rocks on the way in, then the real test is the uphill climb back out. The kids definitely found it tough, but they pushed through and managed it 💪

🔹 Did you know?
• The Blowholes are formed when waves force air and water through narrow cracks in the granite rock
• When the wind and swell line up just right, pressurised air shoots upward, creating a sudden blast
• No two visits are the same — the Blowholes are completely unpredictable, which is half the fun

When the wind pushes through the gaps in the rocks, it can catch you by surprise — a sudden rush of air, spray, and sound that reminds you just how powerful the Southern Ocean is.

A short but adventurous stop before heading on to the next destination.

🐟 Salmon Holes
📍 Torndirrup National Park, Albany WA

Third stop of the day ✨

Another quick but impressive stop to take in the views before jumping back in the car for the next adventure.

🔹 Did you know?
• It’s named after the annual salmon migration, when thousands of fish gather close to the coastline
• The area is surrounded by steep granite cliffs and powerful Southern Ocean swells

The viewing platform is an easy 2-minute walk from the car park, making it a great stop for families.
The walk down to the beach, however, is very steep wooden steps — definitely challenging for young kids.

Perfect as a short stop to admire the ocean’s power, snap a photo, and move on to the next destination.

🌊 The Gap & Natural Bridge
📍 Torndirrup National Park, Albany WA

Second stop of the day ✨
Another absolutely breathtaking stop along the coast. Watching the waves crash below, sending a cool mist into the air was the perfect refresh on a hot day.

🔹 Did you know?
• The Gap is a natural granite channel carved by the Southern Ocean over thousands of years
• Waves can surge up to 40 metres below the viewing platform
• The Natural Bridge was formed by erosion, creating a striking rock span shaped by wind and sea, which eventually the natural bridge will collapse.

This stop is ideal for families — just an easy 2-minute walk from the car park, with onsite drop toilets, plenty of parking, and lots of space suitable for campers too.

Big views. Powerful ocean. Minimal effort.

📍 Can we go somewhere today?

🧭 Geocaching — for those that don’t know, geocaching is a real-world treasure hunt using GPS coordinates. All you need is your phone, a sense of adventure, and a bit of curiosity. Around the world, millions of geocaches are hidden just waiting to be found.

It’s a great way to pass time during the day or break up a long trip with a few unexpected stops along the way.

Today we ticked off a few geocaches in Denmark, all created by ex-engineer Roymerc. These definitely aren’t your average finds, they take a bit of thinking, problem-solving, and patience to locate and unlock. The kind that makes you feel extra satisfied when you finally crack it.

Most geocaches are small containers, tins, or clever magnetic hides, tucked away on benches, bridges, trees, or places you’ve probably walked past a hundred times without ever knowing they were there.

Give it a go today… because once you find your first one, you’ll be hooked 😉

📍 Albany | EMU Point Sporting Club

Can we go somewhere today?

Today we spent a fun hour at the local sporting club and it was such an easy win for the kids. 🎾

Tennis courts are $10 for a 30-minute slot, and you can book online using the QR code on arrival, just remember to bring your bank card.

Right next door you’ll find crown green bowling and filtered water access, making it a relaxed spot to hang out while the kids burn off some energy.

Simple, affordable and outdoors — just how we like it.
