I stopped here for a breaky before heading out into the bush to explore some of the gold-bearing waterways around the area. ☕️⛏️
Kenilworth sits in the beautiful Mary Valley, on the Mary River, and it has a surprisingly interesting connection with Queensland's gold-mining history.
When gold was discovered at Gympie in 1867, thousands of hopeful miners travelled through this region on their way to the Gympie goldfields. The old routes through the Mary Valley became important ways of getting people and supplies through the country. Sunshine Coast Council
But there's gold a lot closer to Kenilworth too. Queensland geological records document numerous gold prospects and workings in the surrounding country, including an old mine south of Kenilworth and gold occurrences around Walli and Chinaman Creeks. One recorded prospect even produced exceptionally high-grade samples.
And here's another interesting bit of history — Kenilworth wasn't originally a town at all. The name came from the Kenilworth cattle run established on the Mary River in 1850. The township itself wasn't surveyed until 1921, with the first shops and community buildings appearing in the 1920s.
So while Kenilworth today is a beautiful, quiet hinterland town, there's a lot more history beneath the surface than you might think.
And yes… after breaky, I headed out and grabbed some of it. 😎⛏️

We’re somewhere in Queensland, in a quiet country town tucked away in a hinterland.
I stopped here for breaky before heading out into the bush to try my luck in the creeks. ☕️⛏️
This area might look more like a peaceful country getaway today, but it has a much more interesting past. There’s a long history of gold in the surrounding country, and at least five gold-bearing rivers and creeks are within reach of here. 🪙

🎯 **WHERE AM I? — HERE’S THE ANSWER!**

On Sunday, I was standing outside this pub in **Monto, Queensland**.

But Monto wasn’t the real reason I was there… 👀

I was heading out towards **Cania Gorge**, about 30 km away, and into one of Queensland’s old goldfields.

Gold was discovered in the Cania area in **1870**, and a mining town grew up along Three Moon Creek as miners arrived looking for gold.

But here’s the really interesting part…

**That old goldfield town is now under Lake Cania.** 😮

When Cania Dam was completed in 1982, the lake covered the remains of the old mining settlement.

Even the old cemetery was relocated, with the headstones moved to higher ground.

And despite all those years of mining, **there are still pockets of gold around the old Cania goldfield** — which is what makes exploring this area so interesting for a prospector. ⛏️

So underneath that beautiful Queensland landscape is a fascinating history of miners, gold and a town that disappeared beneath the water.

Where Are We? 🤔👇

We’re somewhere in Australia, in a quiet country town that has a much bigger gold-mining story nearby than you might expect.

I stopped here before heading out into the bush to explore some old mine workings.

About 30 km from here is the site of an old mining town that once had people, shops and a whole community — but today, much of it lies beneath a dam. 🌊

The area around here has a long history of gold mining, and there are still plenty of old workings hiding away in the bush.
