For 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of observing humpback whales in the waters of Far North Queensland,and my connection with them continues to grow deeper every season. 🐋💙
It isn’t only about witnessing a spectacular breach. It’s the entire interaction: the first blow in the distance, the anticipation as they approach, the sound of their breathing, the curiosity in the way they move around us, the eye contact, the powerful tail disappearing beneath the surface,and the silence while we wait for them to return.
Scientists believe breaching may be a form of communication, play, courtship or a way to remove parasites. But when you spend time with these animals, it feels like there is something more,an intelligence, a presence and an awareness that is difficult to put into words.
Every encounter is different. Every encounter feels personal. After 12 years, sharing the ocean with humpback whales remains one of the most intense and emotional experiences of my life, something I will never stop feeling grateful for.
