Recently we were guests of the Oberoi Bali resort. Situated on 9 acres of beachfront at Seminyak beach the Oberoi is a haven for those wanting relaxation and tranquility . What stands out apart from the beautifully appointed villas in a traditional Balinese style is the staff. There is a strong commitment to service, nothing is too much trouble and they are genuinely wishing to make your stay enjoyable. I loved the included breakfast, all à la carte, no queuing and a wide variety of choices. Poolside, thoughtful touches such as bottled water and a little pack containing mist spray and sunscreen brought to your chair by the staff and later snacks of fruit and ice cream. True luxury!

Feeling back in time. On meeting the Komodo Dragons there is a sense of awe of their size and formidable power. Yes this Komodo dragon is real. They can live over 50 years are only carnivorous and can be cannabilistic! I was glad we were with our trusty guides!

Our first port of call Kupang. What this town lacks in fancy resorts is made up by the warm smiles and genuine friendliness of the locals who clearly were very happy to have Crystal Serenity visit. Our tour included a very interesting visit to the museum, a demonstration of how palm sugar and palm wine is made and a delightful music and dance ensemble. Thank you Kupang for making us so welcome.

Boarding the beautiful Crystal Serenity in hometown Darwin is such a thrill. We are bound for Bali via Kupang and Komodo island. The first thing that you notice when you get on board is the space and relaxed luxury. Our Sapphire verandas suite is spacious with a separate living area, walk in wardrobe, double shower bathroom and generous sized balcony. A mini bar fully stocked to enjoy as well as a welcoming bottle of sparkling to set the holiday mood as we sail out of Darwin. Our personal butler calls in to see if we need anything! Afternoon tea follows and then a sumptuous dinner in the Waterside restaurant. Bon Voyage

The next highlight of our trip was Karijini National park located in the Hamersley Ranges. A much looked forward part of our journey. Accommodation was at the Karijini Eco Retreat. It is quite a large property with extensive camping areas and the options of Eco tents of which there are 3 main categories. We had a deluxe eco tent with ensuite. Comfortable, beautifully set in the bush with a lovely veranda to enjoy the view. Each day was filled with great hikes, breathtaking vistas and an appreciation of nature. We can’t wait to go back again there is so much to see and do.

The next part of our journey was to visit the Horizontal Falls. Journey Beyond offer several options to experience this amazing phenomena. You can do a day trip from either Derby or Broome or an overnight stay. For the overnight stay there are two choices, their standard cabin accommodation with shared bathroom facilities which is situated at the main arrival area or you can have their luxury option on a separate houseboat which has ensuite cabins and is an all inclusive package with meals, drinks and excursions. I booked the luxury option and was really impressed with the standard and quality of the meals. The staff were very welcoming and professional a true credit to their company. There were many exciting experiences to enjoy. We travelled by seaplane from Derby to Talbot Bay flying over the horizontal falls. The pilot made sure each side of the plane had a great view. Then we landed at the main reception area and were whisked off for our first trip through the falls. It was one of the largest tides at 10.4 metres and it felt a cross between a roller coaster and a whirlpool as we were literally flung through the opening! We had a great afternoon all to do with boating and marvelling at the beautiful scenery and even had time for fishing and a visit to the pool on the main deck for a swim and to see sharks being hand fed. Then back to the houseboat for pre dinner drinks and a superb meal. There is a maximum of 20 guests on this houseboat. We were 16 guests and this lent itself to a cosy and friendly atmosphere. Next morning up early for a low tide ride through the falls, followed by breakfast and then sadly our seaplane back to Derby. It was a memorable adventure and one I would highly recommend.

The next part of our road trip was to travel the infamous Gibb River road from just beyond Emma Gorge to Derby. This road crosses some of the most rugged areas of the Kimberley region North West of Australia. 4WD is recommended as the road is full of corrugations in parts and several creek crossings. During the “wet” the road is often cut. We crossed over the Pentecost river through stones and mud and luckily the water levels not too high. A welcome stop at Ellenbrae station for their scones and tea and then onto Mt Elizabeth station for our overnight stop. My Elizabeth station is a good 30 kms from the main road. It caters for campers as well as offering cabin accommodation. We were in a cabin with ensuite. Dinner was buffet style for the many guests from the campground and the cabins. An old style roast dinner and pavlova to follow. Amazing effort given the remoteness of this area.
Next day we stopped at Mt Barnett roadhouse for a quick cuppa (this is the entrance for Manning Gorge) and then made our way to Adcock Gorge. Although closer to the main road about 5 kms of rocky and difficult terrain but rewarded with a wonderful swim at the gorge. Next overnight was APTs Bell Gorge retreat. Tents a bit more upmarket from the bungle Bungle property and has been recently renovated and even has power points in the tents. Another excellent experience. Next day on to Bell Gorge . 10kms down the main road and then another 30 on corrugated and stony terrain. Why are always the most beautiful places so hard to get to. Well worth the extra 30 minute hike in.. an oasis of loveliness. Sadly for us coming out on this road we literally shredded a tyre. What always gets me in these remote areas is how many people stop and offer help. It is heartwarming and thanks to help we were on the road in no time but drove very carefully on to Derby. There are so many highlights on this road and beyond. I have mentioned only a few but it truly is one of my most favourite parts of Australia.

Our next stop was El Questro homestead. This beautiful property has long been admired and appreciated by its visitors. Whilst there are other accommodation options on the station the homestead offers an intimate experience with only a maximum of 20 guests. It is an all inclusive experience- gourmet meals, an open bar and included sightseeing. The homestead offers a restful retreat from the busyness of everyday life but also showcases the many attractions this area has to offer. Guests can choose their own program of activities, you can be as busy or lazy as you wish. Some of the attractions at El Questro have special entry times for guests. I had Zebedee hot springs all to myself! There are great hikes for the energetic all with your own personal guide. We even went barramundi fishing! And for those that want more there are several excellent helicopter experiences for an additional cost.

The last 4 weeks I’ve had the privilege of travelling through some of Australia’s most remote areas and I wanted to share some of the highlights of our trip. First stop was Purnulu National Park and the Bungle Bungle Range. It is a 4WD only drive into the park. Around 53 kms to the information centre and then another 10 kms to the APT Bungle Bungle camp where we stayed. The camp caters mainly for APTs 4WD group tours but they do accommodate independent travellers if space is available. Very comfortable glamping with breakfast included and dinner can also be added. The staff were great and food delicious. Wifi available in the main dining area and a tea and coffee station always available. We opted to do a helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle range. It really is worth doing as the area is so large and absolutely spectacular. We did several hikes and highlights were Cathedral Gorge and Echidna Chasm. A memorable visit .
