The South Island tends to get all the attention when it comes to New Zealand walking, but if you're spending time up north there are some tracks that are genuinely worth going out of your way for. 🌿

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the obvious starting point. It's a full day across volcanic terrain — craters, the bright blue lakes, open ridge lines — and on a clear day it's hard to top anywhere in the country. It's well-trodden for good reason and worth getting out early to make the most of it.

The walk to Tāne Mahuta in Waipoua Forest is a completely different experience. It's not long, but standing in front of New Zealand's largest living kauri tree is one of those moments that doesn't need much explaining.

For coastal walking, the Coromandel Coastal Walkway often flies under the radar. A few hours along the clifftops above the Hauraki Gulf, not too strenuous, and the kind of scenery that makes you want to come back.

Fiordland is one of those places that genuinely stops you in your tracks, and this six-day self-drive is one of the best ways to experience it.

Starting in Queenstown and heading south to Te Anau, the next few days are spent out on the tracks — helicoptering up to the Kepler, walking the Milford with a cruise on the Sound to end the day, then finishing the week on the Routeburn. For most people, yes — and it's honestly one of the best ways to see the country.

Roads are well-maintained, clearly signposted, and outside of Auckland traffic is rarely an issue. Driving is on the left, the open road limit is 100km/h, and the distances between stops are easy to manage across a day.

The main thing to keep in mind is that kilometres take longer than they look on a map. Roads wind through mountains and hug coastlines rather than cutting straight through — which is exactly what makes them so good, but worth factoring into your days.

One-lane bridges pop up regularly in rural areas and are easy once you know to expect them. Mountain weather can shift quickly around Tongariro and alpine routes in the South Island, so a quick conditions check before heading into the hills is always worth it.

Beyond that, New Zealand pretty much takes care of itself. Routes like the Pacific Coast Highway and the road into Milford Sound are the kind of drives you'll be talking about long after you're home.
