Big shout out 📣to this guy. Hudson ! Our “Happy Herper” 4 years has flown by so fast. From a work experience week which feels like yesterday , to being an incredibly important part of our team. Can’t thank you enough for always representing Feature creatures in the best possible light. What a whopping female Giant Burrowing cockroach 🪳!! The largest species of roach in the world right here in Australia. 🇦🇺 weighing in at the same as a budgerigar 🐦 Always doing their best job to recycle old leaf litter deep into the ground helping to fertilise and make rich much needed topsoil.
Every creature has a role in nature 🍂🍃even this little beauty that we have named “ Black Betty Bamba lam” 🎶

Some good news for crocodiles ! 🐊

🚫 CROCODILE BILL REJECTED AGAIN 🐊

The Queensland Health, Environment and Innovation Committee has recommended NOT TO PASS Shane Knuth MP’s Crocodile Control and Conservation Bill 2025 - the 5th time since 2017 this bill has been rejected.

Key Findings: ✅ QLD’s crocodile population is stable, not “out of control” ✅ Fatal attacks remain steady at 0.4 per year over 40 years ✅ Current management plan rated “world-class” by experts ✅ 190 submissions received, majority opposed the bill
The 8 Committee Recommendations:

1. 🚫 Do NOT pass the bill
2. 📍 Modify zone boundaries for atypical populations
3. 🪧 Improve ‘Be Crocwise’ signage at boat ramps
4. 📱 Better use QWildlife app for public updates
5. 📚 Enhance public education programs
6. 🔬 Continue research & monitoring
7. ⚖️ Review current management practices
8. 🤝 Improve stakeholder consultation

Bottom line: Education and current management work better than culling. You can’t make waterways 100% safe without making crocodiles extinct entirely.
