What better way to finish a holiday than with an incredible kayak tour to an ancient sunken city. The weather was absolutely perfect, with just us, another couple and our guide out on the water. We paddled along the stunning coastline, enjoyed delicious snacks, stopped for swims in little bays with crystal-clear blue water, visited the charming Little Theatre of Epidaurus overlooking the sea, and finished the day snorkelling above an ancient sunken city just off the beach.

As if that wasn't enough, we also spotted a sea turtle 🐢, sea urchins and lots of colourful little fish along the way.

This holiday has truly been an amazing adventure. Looking back, I still can't quite grasp how much we've seen, explored and experienced over the past few weeks. Greece, you've been pretty special. 🇬🇷💙

I have been looking forward to see this theatre with my own eyes and it did not disappoint. Standing in the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus was one of those moments that genuinely gave me goosebumps. Built in the 4th century BC, it’s crazy to think this incredible theatre has been standing here for over 2,000 years and is still famous for its almost perfect acoustics.

Even sitting right at the top, you can hear sounds from the centre stage so clearly — the engineering behind it is honestly mind blowing. 😍 The theatre could seat around 14,000 people and was originally used for performances honouring Asclepius, the Greek god of healing/medicine.

Surrounded by beautiful green hills, it’s such a peaceful and special place to visit and one of those spots that really makes history come alive. Definitely one of the highlights of our Greece trip.

It was also worth it getting up early to come here just after 8am in the morning to have this theatre almost to ourselves before the tour buses arrived. 🙌

Nafplio… you have stolen my heart 😍

Wandering through the charming old town with its colourful alleyways, bougainvillea-covered streets, little boutiques and waterfront promenade instantly made us slow down and soak it all in. There’s something so special about this place — relaxed, elegant and full of character.

Nafplio is a small and charming port town in the Peloponnese with a rich history and absolutely stunning scenery. Once the first capital of modern Greece in the early 19th century, today it blends history with a relaxed coastal atmosphere that makes you instantly slow down.

Think colourful Venetian architecture, narrow alleyways, waterfront walks, little cafés and impressive fortresses watching over the town. Surrounded by mountains and sitting right on the sea, it feels postcard-perfect from every angle.

Yesterday we spent time exploring, enjoying the slower pace and simply taking in the atmosphere. It’s easy to see why so many people fall in love with Nafplio. 🥰

Being here in May ( off season) with picture perfect weather ☀️ and almost no crowds ( aka tourists) is such a wonderful way of experiencing this town.

It's one of those places that feels beautiful without trying too hard… and definitely one I could come back to again.

Add it to your Greece Itinerary for sure!

Picked up our hire car and made our way to Nafplio — about a 2-hour drive from Athens. Along the way we passed the famous Canal of Corinth, an impressive man-made canal connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf. Carved through steep limestone cliffs, it was designed to save ships from making the long journey around the Peloponnese and is such an incredible sight to see in person.

We also stopped at the archaeological site of Mycenae, one of Greece’s most important ancient sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back more than 3,000 years, Mycenae was once a powerful kingdom and is linked to King Agamemnon from Greek mythology. Walking through the ancient ruins and imagining life here thousands of years ago was pretty spectacular.

The drive itself was one of the highlights — leaving busy Athens behind, driving through the mountains and along the coastline. Such a beautiful change of pace and exactly why I always recommend slowing down and exploring beyond the cities.

The kids continue to amaze us as little travellers. Most days we’ve averaged around 13k steps in 28-degree heat and somehow they keep going — powered mainly by tzatziki, saganaki, pita bread and Greek yoghurt 😅

Not quite sure how we’ll adjust back to Aussie food and colder weather next week, but for now we’re soaking up every bit of the Greek sunshine, history and incredible food 🇬🇷

Today we finally made it to the Acropolis of Athens and the iconic Parthenon 🏛️✨

And while it is an incredibly impressive site to experience in real life, the crowds were a little overwhelming. We joined a 5:30pm tour for around two hours and honestly — the weather could not have been more perfect. Overcast skies, 22°C and a beautiful fresh breeze.

Considering how hot it gets in summer (and we already had some pretty warm days in May), I would highly recommend either going first thing in the morning (early access!) or later in the afternoon to avoid both the heat and peak crowds.

The Acropolis itself dates back over 2,500 years and was the heart of ancient Athens — a fortified hill dedicated to the goddess Athena, protector of the city. Sitting proudly at the top is the Parthenon, built between 447–432 BC during Athens’ golden age under Pericles. Originally constructed as a temple to Athena, it remains one of the world’s most famous symbols of classical architecture and ancient civilisation.

Personally, I found the views towards the Acropolis — both by day and illuminated at night — even more impressive than actually being up on the hill itself. There’s currently a lot of restoration happening and somehow it’s hard to fully soak up the scale and grandness of this incredible place while weaving through thousands of people… especially with kids.

My personal highlight though was the Odeon of Herodes Atticus — Athens’ most majestic stage. Widely known by locals as simply “Herodeon”, this stunning open-air theatre was built between 160–174 AD by the wealthy benefactor Herodes Atticus in memory of his late wife Rigilla. Seeing it tucked beneath the Acropolis was incredible. In summer they host concerts and performances there and I can absolutely imagine how magical that atmosphere would be… definitely something I’d love to experience if I come back one day 🎭✨🇬🇷

By accident I found a spot on Google Maps that I thought would be worth adding to our little sightseeing trip… and I’m so glad we did ✨

Only a 30-minute drive from Rethymno, Arkadi Monastery turned out to be one of those places that stays with you. Beautiful, peaceful and incredibly moving, this historic monastery holds such an important place in Crete’s history.

“The Monastery of Arkadi is an irrefutable witness to the power, excellence and greatness of the human soul.”

Walking through the peaceful courtyards and learning about the stories behind these walls made this visit feel really special. ☺️

Entry fee is €4 per person and children are free — and it’s so worth it. Highly recommend to add this to your itinerary if you are planning to visit Crete.

Went to a small little resort town yesterday to have a look around for the afternoon. Georgioupoli 🇬🇷 is about 25min from Rhethymno and it was really lovely.

We walked across the little stone pathway out to the tiny chapel in the sea — the Chapel of Agios Nikolaos, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. Such an adventurous little walk for the kids and honestly… such a beautiful little chapel. So Greek and very Mamma Mia vibes (in my opinion 😍).

Afterwards we wandered along the promenade with its tavernas, cafés and little shops and spotted some gorgeous places to stay. Georgioupoli is a small resort town with a beautiful long beach and such an easy place to spend a relaxed afternoon.

One thing I’ve really loved here in Crete — so many beaches offer sun chairs and umbrellas which makes beach days so easy and enjoyable, especially with kids. No dragging half the house to the beach 😅 Just settle in, enjoy the views and stay for a few hours.

While there isn’t a huge amount to “do” here, seeing the chapel sitting in the water and visiting the Orthodox church in town made it absolutely worth it. Beautiful from the outside, but the paintings and details inside were incredible.

One of those simple afternoons that end up being a highlight ✨
