As a travel agent - I'm constantly learning. Nothing stays the same, so on the odd occasion I get out of the office and get stuck into some learning. Last week I had the pleasure of catching up with NCL, Oceania and Regent cruise lines with some fellow itravel consultants. Every day's a school day!

Today I had the absolute pleasure of meeting some engaging business owners at Wilton Business Network. I wanted to thank Alex for chairing the get together. Debbie Roberts Consulting for focusing my attention to setting some 2025 goals.
Today’s focus was on UYGW. Amazing company that I shall be commandeering to strengthen some of Luke weaknesses in 2025.
Looking forward to the next meeting 🙂

NICE CHANGES
The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, signed a law that bans large cruise ships from visiting destinations in the Nice-Côte d’Azur region.

According to a report by Le Monde, ships with over 900 guests will no longer be welcomed at local ports, which include major tourism destinations such as Villefranche-sur-Mer and the city of Nice.

Also serving as president of the French region, Estrosi plans to limit calls of large ships starting in July 2025.

The mayor is quoted as saying that the new measure aims at promoting “selective tourism” in the face of the threat of “overtourism.”

While Estrosi has no authority to prohibit vessels from visiting, he can ban vessels from disembarking in the region’s ports, Le Monde said.

It’s unclear how Estrosi plans to deal with cruise calls already scheduled for the impacted ports.

In an interview with Le Figaro, he said he is looking into the matter to see “under which conditions port reservations can be cancelled.”

The new law is expected to have a significant impact on Villefranche-sur-Mer, which serves as a popular port of call for large ships from various cruise lines.

Among the vessels scheduled to visit the destination in 2025 are Royal Caribbean’s 3,430-guest Voyager of the Seas, Celebrity’s 3,260-guest Ascent, and Norwegian’s 4,200-guest Epic.

With infrastructure limitations, the city of Nice is already being visited by smaller ships, which will limit the impact of the new law.

The town is currently working on a series of developments to better accommodate the vessels, Le Monde said. Plans call for a shore power system that will allow ships to shut down their engines while docked.

Mayor Estrosi initially revealed his plans to ban cruise ships from visiting the region during a speech early in January.

At the time, he stated that large cruise ships that “pollute and dump their low-cost clients” are not welcome in ports of call in the French region of Nice-Côte d’Azur.

“These vessels do not correspond in any way to the model that we want to develop in terms of hospitality tourism,” Estrosi added.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has issued a new travel warning for Türkiye following numerous recent deaths relating to methanol-laced alcoholic drinks.

According to DFAT’s Smartraveller website, there have been many recent deaths reported in Istanbul from methanol in counterfeit drinks – with both locals and travellers having reported poisoning.

In its latest advice for Türkiye, DFAT urges Australian travellers to “be alert to the potential risks around food and drink spiking and methanol poisoning”.

“Consider the risks when drinking alcoholic beverages, particularly drinks made with spirits. Labels on bottles aren’t always accurate,” it states.

“Stick to reputable venues and beware of suspiciously cheap alcohol. Avoid homemade alcohol.”

After multiple raids across the city, the Istanbul Police Department has seized around 33 tonnes of counterfeit alcohol, a distillation apparatus and other equipment, Türkiye Today reported.

The licenses of 64 businesses involved in illegal alcohol sales have also been revoked.

For my Brissy customers:

The Solomon Islands national carrier announced it would launch a new non-stop Brisbane-Auckland service from 21 February 2025, expanding the airline’s Oceania reach and providing more choice for two-way travel between the Queensland and NZ capitals.

Utilising its A320 aircraft, Solomon Airlines will operate the service once weekly, with Auckland-Brisbane flights (IE725) departing AKL at 6.30am on Friday and arriving in BNE at 7.15am.

Brisbane-Auckland flights (IE724) will then leave BNE on Friday at 6.50pm and land in AKL at 12.55am (+1).

Solomon Airlines will offer business and economy classes on the route, with fares starting from $1,231 and $521, respectively.

The Pacific carrier also operates three-times-weekly Brisbane-Honiara (Solomon Islands) flights, once-weekly Brisbane-Munda (Solomon Islands) flights and a weekly service between the Queensland capital and Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu.

So if you didn't know, P&O Australia are transitioning to be identified as Carnival Australia in March. Its going to be a combo deal of the funnest cruise brands in Australia.

In the day of limited funds, sometimes a quick break is all it takes to refresh your soul. So with that in mind, POrnival are having a sale. Have a laugh on a comedy cruise (that was a joke there is no p**n onboard!!), or head to Moreton Island for a burn on a quad bike through the sand dunes. Or a segway ride on a beach.... where else in the world can you do that? (don't answer that).

Better yet, head to the South Pacific or the Barrier Reek over winter - it's a no brainer. Right now you may not need it but give it a couple of months and you might so plan ahead
Sale starts TODAY! only runs until 24 Jan 25

If you’re going to the Australian Open, there is a LOT of walking involved. So wearing your new shoes from Christmas may not be the best option. I got a blister and was thanking the seven heavens because the geniuses at Chemist Warehouse were on hand to help me out. Right near the outdoor screens and various stands was a Chemist Warehouse

If you’re thinking of attending any sporting events in Melbourne, Mantra on Jolimont is where to stay. It’s walking distance to MCG and Rod Laver. It’s 800m walk to Flinders St. You have a tram stop close to take you into town @ Tennis centre and Jolimont Train Station not far away.

Sometimes the time between checkout and your flight can be long. So I tend to put my cozzie in my carryon with a wet bag. Checkout of the hotel and then laze beside the pool until time for my flight. I also pack a deck of cards - in this case UNO No Mercy - to laugh your way through the hours as you wait.
