The upper grating and the loading block were placed on top of the sample.
6. The desired normal load was applied. The total normal load was the sum of the load and the dead weight of the loading yoke.
7. The halves of the soil container were separated by removing the lock screws, and the upward frame was slightly raised by turning the spacing screws.
8. The shear box was adjusted so that it just touched the proving ring.
9. The dial gauges were attached to measure shear and normal displacements. The initial readings were recorded or set to zero.
10. Shear loading was started at a selected constant rate of strain. Readings were taken from the three dial gauges (two for displacement and one for the proving ring) at regular intervals of 15 seconds and recorded. The test continued until failure, where the horizontal force became constant. The peak and ultimate values of proving readings were noted carefully.
11. Steps 3 to 6 were repeated on a fresh soil sample using the same weight of soil with the same initial density but with different applied normal loads.
