Finally completed my last blog post from an amazing trip to Egypt in March.

This is the fourth post in a series of four about my March 2023 trip to Egypt. The first blog post covered our delightful stop in Zurich (read about that here) and the second our first few days in Cairo, available here. The third focused on getting from Cairo to Luxor, onto our Nile River cruise and...

Egypt is magical. Read about my time in Luxor and the beginning of our Nile River Cruise.

Our Egyptian adventure began with a short stay in Cairo (read about that here) and then continued with an obscenely early departure (4:00 am) from the St. Regis back to the Cairo Airport. Audley had everything arranged, including a nice take-away breakfast bag, and we seemingly had loads of time to....

We did a power tour of the Magritte Museum while in Brussels yesterday. Magritte was a Belgian artist famous for placing everyday objects in unusual contexts and he has had a lot of influence on pop and modern art.

Düsseldorf is a city in western Germany known for its fashion industry and art scene. It's divided by the Rhine River, with its Altstadt (Old Town) on the east bank and modern commercial areas to the west. In the Altstadt, St. Lambertus Church and Schlossturm (Castle Tower) both date to the 13th century. Streets such as Königsallee and Schadowstrasse are lined with boutique shops.

One of the more interesting museums we’ve visited was the DDR - German (Deutsche) Democratic Republic - Museum. Covering the economy, politics, communications and everyday life in East Germany under Soviet control. It was very interactive and a fascinating look at life behind the iron curtain.

Yesterday we did a walking tour in Mitte (Center) Berlin. Berlin was not a major city until the late 1800’s when it was selected as capital of the Prussia Empire (Germany didn’t yet exist). The city has a lot of Prussian era influences interrupted by the damage of the war and then the pre-fab modernization of East Germany (where Mitte sits). So very interesting architecture all around and in varying states of neglect and renovation. Also many hidden courtyards full of housing and shopping complexes, totally hidden from view. Really fascinating walk.

Surrounded by the Opera, a church, law school and other university buildings, this is where the Nazi-sponsored German Student Association on May 10, 1933 burned about 20,000 books about science, law, history, philosophy, health and other topics. Small memorial remains in the center.
